Shopping in Key West is always fun if you know where to go! Key West shops are abundant and everyone knows how to find the touristy shops on Duval Street, but there great shops just off Duval St. that are well worth your time to check out.

Here are a few shops just off the beaten path you won’t want to miss.

Several pairs of Kino Sandals in navy blue

Your Key West vacation isn’t complete without a visit to the Kino Sandal factory. Only made in Key West!

This little shop has been pumping out island sandals since 1966. Hand crafted real leather sandals from this original Key West historical shop is your best buy in Key West history.

These adorable leather sandals that will last for many years and will only cost around $20.

Plus, it’s an experience too. You can watch the ladies sewing sandals in the back and delight in the smell of new leather that lingers through out the store.

2. Besame Mucho

Besame Mucho Storefront.

After I devour the best lobster benedict with hollandaise sauce at my favorite place to eat breakfast in Key West, I walk over to Besame Mucho to see what’s new!

Since it’s off the beaten path, most people miss out on what is the best curated curio shop on the island.

Unusual and distinctive jewelry pieces, attractive leather bound journals, cosmetics and perfumes and stylish clothes from around the world. It’s a high end boutique, so expect prices to match.

Even if you don’t buy, you’ll love browsing this store.

3. Peppers of Key West – (Permanently Closed May 2020)

Location: 602 Greene St, Key West, FL 33040

Peppers of Key West hot sauce samples

Peppers of Key West was such a fun experience, but due to the current world events and travel goals of the owner, the store in Key West is permanently closed. You can still purchase hot sauce online at Peppers of Key West.

If you love hot sauces (but not all are hot!) then you’ll put Peppers of Key West on the top of your list to visit.

Pepper’s offers more than shopping in Key West, it’s a whole experience.

There is a full bar of hot sauces to sample, all for free. The employees will help you identify your “heat” preference as well as hone in on your taste preferences to recommend the sauces you’ll like best.

After taste testing, you might want to cool down with a cocktail! Pick out one of these fantastic restaurants or bars that offer the best happy hour deals on the island.

And if hot sauces aren’t your thing, check out a variety of offerings in their seasonings, gift baskets, cookbooks, jellies and pickled products. I’d be amazed if you couldn’t find something you just had to have in this shop!

4. Rodriguez Cigar Factory

Location: 113 Fitzpatrick St, Key West, FL 33040

Box of cigars.

Don’t be tempted to buy cigars from the street vendors in Key West. Head on over to Rodriquez Cigar Factory where the cigars are fresh and properly stored.

The Rodriguez family is steeped in Cuban cigar history, but when the Cuban government took over their tobacco farm and business they were forced out of the country. Finding refuge and a new beginning in Key West, they are the oldest cigar factory on the island.

This is another Key West shop where you’ll enjoy an experience beyond shopping.

Take the tour, watch them roll cigars and enjoy authentic Cuban espresso. Learn about cigars and pick out your favorite from the variety of offerings. A fine gift for friends and family back home.

5. 7 Artists & Friends

Location: 213 Simonton St, Key West, FL 33040

Pam Hobbs print of a beach scene

I remember when this shop first opened and it was located on Duval St. I came away with 3 Pam Hobbs prints, which I had framed and are still hanging in my home today.

Ten years have passed since then and from what I understand, the rental spaces on Duval Street have more than quadrupled in price. This is why you find mostly large chain stores, cheap tourist shops owned by much larger companies, popular bars and the lucky businesses who got in early (at least by the 1990’s) who own their own buildings.

The 7 Artists and Friends shop is now in a lovely spot with a cute courtyard. It’s a special place that primarily showcases local Key West artists.

What you’ll find are large varieties of art in all kinds of mediums. Hand crafted jewelry, local photography, art prints, glass art, sculptures and more.

6. Local Color

Location: 276 Margaret St., Key West, FL

Shop in Key West called Local Color storefront with ladies outfits hanging on the door.

The ultimate boutique shopping in Key West. There are three Local Color shops, two are beautiful boutiques and one is a small jewelry only store. The two boutiques are a shopping delight with tons of flowy ladies resort wear and unique island jewelry.

The jewelry is what they are most known for on the island. Big, beautiful statement pieces in just about every stone imaginable, plus feminine dainty drops to large chunky bracelets. Their ring selection is vast and you’re sure to find one you can’t pass up.

A lot of Key West themed jewelry too, which makes a great reminder of your vacation. The Key West hook bracelet and the sterling sliver Key West themed bead bracelet are two of my favorite pieces that remind me of this fun little island.
