Enjoy a Los Cabos Mexico Surfing Vacation

Visiting the Los Cabos area can provide many different and unique experiences, such as whale watching and fabulous sport fishing, but I elected to attempt something I had rarely done on vacation: surfing. I learned to surf at age 14, but living inland, put the sport to use very rarely. In the Los Cabos area, however, I found some excellent surf venues.

Los Cabos refers to the area in the tip of the Baja region of Mexico, which is flanked by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Sea of Cortez on the other. Most folks arrive by airplane and the airport is just outside San Jose de Cabo. A short thirty minute drive up the coast winds through an area called the Corridor and to Cabo San Lucas – therefore, the area is called Los Cabos.

The drive to historic Todos Santos, about 50 minutes north of Cabo San Lucas, should be on an adventurer’s itinerary. The highway has had a recent renovation and some stunning views of the Pacific Ocean shore can be seen at various points along the drive. A favorite stop along the way is an eclectic little bar called Art and Beer… but that’s another article!

About eight miles before the tiny town’s city limits lies one of the best surfing beaches on the Pacific Mexico coast: Cerritos Beach. It’s can be a bumpy ride off the main highway to the beach area, but what a wonderful area awaits! Cerritos Beach is wide and clean with soft sand and three to five foot waves, which are perfect for surfing. Within a few steps of the frothy surf are some excellent getaway hotels. There’s the palapa-roofed Cerritos Surf Colony, which faces the waves. A few steps up a rocky cliff brings you to a luxury boutique hotel, the Hacienda Cerritos. And closest to the wave action is the Cerritos Beach Club, a recently refurbished outdoor restaurant and bar.

We rented surfboards at a sandy stand and tackled the waves. My husband did better than I did…. after a while, I enjoyed catching my breath on my beach towel, knowing that a tasty margarita was on my agenda as a reward! Even if surfing isn’t in your plan, I can guarantee you’ll relax if you sit at a beachside table, sip a libation and watch the waves break and roll.

A calmer place to surf on the north side of San Jose de Cabo, south of Cabo San Lucas, is the Costa Azul beach. There is a nice boutique hotel called Cabo Surf and I have seen surfing lessons going on here many times. A surfing expedition here is on my next Cabo trip agenda, but I recently spent some time at Zipper’s, a beachfront restaurant at Costa Azul. They specialize in barbeque, but we enjoyed fish tacos and flautas smothered in salsa and cheese.  No complaints about the music, as Buffett was on the sound system when we were there!  After lunch, we enjoyed drinks on their beachfront lounge chairs and had another round of Los Cabos relaxation! Surfboards can be rented from Zipper’s and lessons can be arranged through them, also.

The next time you’re in Los Cabos, take a day and try out a board. Even if you visit the surf beaches as a spectator, you’ll have a fabulous time!
