On May 15th 2015, my husband Steve, took me on a surprise 21st Anniversary trip. We headed south of the Louisville, KY area where we live so I started guessing. As we got off at the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge exit, I knew exactly where we were going!

The new Magaritaville Island Resort in Pigeon Forge!

We watched it being built over the past couple of years and love where it is located, right in the middle of “The Island” in Pigeon Forge. “The Island” holds a near and dear place in my heart as we watched it being built for years past. The original name was “Rose Island” and many years ago they broke ground and started building. The economy dropped out and construction came to a halt. The grass grew up over buildings and it was a VERY sad picture to see. We drove by there every time we visited Pigeon Forge which was about twice a year.

Then, by surprise, we drove by in the spring 2013 and construction was going again! They had a new name, new owners and they would call it “The Island.” When we saw the construction of “The Wheel” going up, we knew this was going to be a BIG deal and we could not have been more happy.

The next visit in the fall of 2013, we were super excited to see the construction of Margaritaville AND a hotel too! WOW, we could not have been more excited. We are Parrot Head’s and have visited almost every Margaritaville you can name. I am a travel agent, so we cruise a lot to the Caribbean visiting, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Key West, Ocho Rios, Grand Turk along with hitting the state side restaurants in Orlando, Myrtle Beach, New Orleans, Cincinnati. Plus, we’ve stayed at the Margaritaville Hotel in Pensacola and now this one at The Island. We have many more on our list to visit, like the brand new Margaritaville hotel in Hollywood Florida.

But, this hotel at The Island BLEW us away. As we checked in, we got to see the Margaritaville Coffee Shop on one side of the lobby and the Margaritaville Lounge on the other side.

The staff was super nice and very excited for us to be visiting. You can defiantly feel the Jimmy Buffett atmosphere with the decor, pictures, and music. It is over the top friendly. Our room wasn’t quite ready, so we went up to the roof top pool to hang out, where I was surprised again by 2 friends that met us there for the weekend. The roof top pool has a huge beautiful bar and has food available.

Our room was ready soon after. As we entered, I quickly realized we had a large suite. It had 3 rooms. The 1st room was a sitting room with a fire place and Tv. The 2nd room was a long room with your very own Margaritaville concoction maker, glasses and all. The hotel will supply you with everything you need to make margaritas or you can bring the supplies from home. My husband packed all that we needed! On this bar, you have a fridge as well as a Keurig coffee maker.

Then into the king bedroom that overlooked the beautiful Island fountain that will blow your mind. The last room was the HUGE bathroom with a jetted tub and glassed in shower with a rain shower head. It was truly the finest resort room we had ever seen. Our double doors lead out to the balcony and the view of the fountain that plays to music every hour and half hour from 10am-10pm. Yes, that is right, if you stay out late like us, you like to sleep in. Well, not at this hotel. The music blasted into our room at 10am and was so loud it scared us. It was funny. We got up and went out to the roof top pool and spent the day. Very relaxing.

There is plenty to do right there on the Island. Lots of restaurants, shops and rides for all ages including a 2 story Margaritaville and 5 O’clock Somewhere bar out back with live music and a very inviting party atmosphere. If you get to visit, I recommend The Flight. It is 5 margarita’s for your to sip on and so yummy!

Sadly the outdoor bar was closed for us because of some rain that came in. But, the bartenders still served us some drinks and we had a good time. This hotel was one in a million. It was defiantly worth the money and being Parrot Heads, we felt quite at home! We will defiantly be back and can not wait. Since we visited, they have opened The Margaritaville Spa for us. We can’t wait to take advantage of this next time.

I can’t wait for the next adventure, as I don’t stay home much! Next, I have on my radar the Norwegian Escape cruise ship that teamed up with our Jimmy Buffett and will have a Margaritaville, & The 5 O’clock Somewhere Bar on board. Launching of this new ship is soon! I always have a trip planned and excitement coming! Cheers to you and Fins Up friends! — Joellen Doherty
