The Detentions CD Three

Are you familiar with the Austin-based duo called The Detentions? You may have heard their songs “Coast” and “Sunburned” on Radio Margaritaville in the last year. Well, if you’re attending Pardi Gras in a couple of weeks, you’re in luck! You’ll not only get to hear them perform live, but they will be debuting their third recording there, appropriately titled Three. “The album took longer than previous recordings,” Dan and Chris told me recently, “but it includes an all-start cast of Austin-based musicians.”

This new recording is a delight… a mix of fun songs and haunting ballads, of which Dan Sullivan and Chris Hillier (they ARE The Detentions!) have composed all but two.

The Detentions Release New CD Three

The CD contains ten songs filled with great guitar licks, solid harmonies and some great featured instruments, such as fiddle by Warren Hood and Chip Dolan on accordion. “Terlingua” makes me want to rediscover what all the hype was back in the 70s and 80s about that tiny West Texas town. One of my favorites on the album is “A Little Less Beer on the Island,” which is set in my beloved Port Aransas, Texas. Listen to a snippet here:

Don’t think the whole recording is about Texas, although I want to know where Dan and Chris heard the ghost story that was the inspiration for “”Lantern on the Track.” There are a couple of well-written ballads that may make your eyes a little moist, too. And “Liki Tiki” is full of sexy fun. The first song on the CD is the first effort to cover another musician’s song on a Detentions recording. They sing Donny Brewer’s “Fishing on Credit” with Donny playing along and singing one of the verses. Dan and Chris are also excited to cover The Great Divide’s “Pour Me a Vacation.”

Do not miss this talented duo if you’ll be at Pardi Gras. This is their first time to play the fabulous New Orleans Trop Rock festival and we hope it won’t be their last. Reserve some time on Friday, January 15 from 2:30 to 4:00 at Tropical Isle to catch this new CD release party!
