Homemade banana chips are a delicious healthy snack option and one of my favorite air fryer recipes! Along with these Air Fryer Apple Fries and Air Fryer Baked Apples, for delicious fruit snacks in the air fryer.

Why You’ll Love Air Fryer Banana Chips

Banana chips in air fryer are so good, especially when you’re craving a salty snack. You can enjoy healthy banana chips that will hit the spot, while saving calories. Win-win!

The best part about this crunchy snack? No messy deep fryer, no need to dab them with a paper towel to get off all that excess oil, yet these dehydrated banana chips are an amazingly tasty, crispy snack.

Is An Air Fryer a Dehydrator?

It’s not exactly the same, but the air fryer works in a similar way for banana chips.

A dehydrator cooks on low heat for a long period of time to remove moisture from the food. Where as the air fryer uses extremely hot air for a quicker cooking process.

The fan inside the air fryer swirls this extra hot air all around these banana chips to cook them, which will remove the moisture from the fruit and will dehydrate bananas in just a few minutes.

Although not exactly a dehydrator, it’s a quick method to achieve the same results.

Are Air Fried Banana Chips Gluten Free?

The best part about air fried banana chips is they are a naturally low fat, gluten-free snack that tastes delicious!

Air frying provides a much healthier version of this deep fried snack. With a small amount of olive oil these banana chips crisp right up in the air fryer for a delicious low calorie snack.

Best Bananas to Use

The best bananas are just ripe. Firm, yellow bananas that don’t have hardly any brown spots on the peeling.

Overripe bananas are too soft and mushy to make crispy banana chips and unripe green bananas don’t quite have enough flavor yet.

Now, if you do want your air fryer banana chips to be less sweet, then green bananas could work.

Can I use Plantains?

Absolutely! Plantains are a starchier, less sweet fruit in the banana family. They have a few more calories than bananas, but not significantly.

To make plantain chips, use ripe plantains that have a blackened dark skin. Green plantains aren’t sweet yet, where as the ripe fruit will have a sweeter flavor.

Simply follow the same recipe for air fryer banana chips to make healthy plantain chips, but watch your cook time. You may need a few more minutes in the air fryer because of their thicker texture.

How to Make Air Fryer Banana Chips

Here are the step-by-step instructions for this easy recipe.

Step 1: Peel and thinly slice the raw bananas with a knife or slicer. Slice bananas to about 1/8″ thin slices to make crispy, thin chips.

You don’t want thick slices, as they will take a long time to crisp up, but you can go up to 1/4″ thickness, just make sure to adjust your air fry cook time by a few extra minutes.

Step 2: Line up the sliced banana pieces on a large serving platter, a large piece of parchment paper or on a baking sheet.

Step 3: Use a pastry brush to lightly spread a little oil over the top of the banana slices. If you prefer, you can use cooking spray. Simply spray the banana slices with olive oil cooking spray.

Step 4: Sprinkle table salt or a fine sea salt over the banana slices.

Step 5: Use tongs to flip the banana slices over and again, spray with olive oil and sprinkle with salt.

Step 6: Place the banana slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Don’t overlap or stack the banana slices in the basket. If your air fryer basket doesn’t hold all the banana slices, cook the banana chips in separate batches.

Raw banana slices evenly placed in a single layer in an air fryer basket.

Step 7: Air fry banana chips for 12 minutes cooking time on 360 degrees F until a nice golden color.

Note: As all air fryers are different, your cook time may vary. To ensure the banana chips are full cooked, make sure there are no soft or moist spots on the banana chips before removing. If there are, add 1-2 minutes additional cook time.

If you have some thinner slices, these will cook up faster in the air fryer. There’s no issue with opening your air fryer to check on the banana chips. So, if you have some slices that are super thin, these could be done as fast as 6-7 minutes.

Step 8: Remove the basket of the air fryer, placing it on several hot pads to let the banana chips cool for approximately 5 minutes.

Step 9: Use a spatula to transfer the banana chips onto a cooling rack and let cool for another 5 minutes.

Step 10: Serve immediately. Add a little salt to taste if needed.

How to Serve Banana Chips

These make a great snack or topping! Serve banana chips for the perfect mid-day family snack, pack them in an airtight container and send with the kids for school snacks, or add them as a crunchy topping on a bowl of yogurt.

You can also use them for dipping, just like you would with regular chips. Banana chips taste delicious dipped in guacamole, hummus and even ranch dressing.

Serve as a side dish with sandwiches or Mexican dishes.

Personally, I love them as a simple quick treat, but I do have to be careful not to eat them all at once.

Air Fryer Banana Chips Variations

You can spice up or add other flavors when air frying banana chips. Here are a few options:

Use a flavored oil: use coconut oil to give the bananas a hint of a coconut flavor.

Add Spices: make your banana chips sweeter or spicier with various spices. Add a light sprinkle of cinnamon or brown sugar for a sweeter chip or go for chili powder or Cajun seasoning for a sweet and spicy combination.

How to Store

These homemade banana chips can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

Make sure they are completely cooled before placing in a container or baggie so they don’t create humidity.

No need to refrigerate as long as air can’t get to them, especially humid air, as the banana chips will loose their crispiness.

When you’re looking for a perfect snack, try this air fryer banana chips recipe. These crispy homemade banana chips are a light, filling and salty sweet snack you and your family can enjoy anytime.
