Reasons to Love Air Fryer Pasta Chips

Air Fryer Pasta Chips gained great popularity on the internet recently. This viral TikTok recipe is full of flavor and extremely lightweight. These golden brown crisps are a delicious replacement for potato chips or fries.

The best part about this recipe is you don’t need a lot of oil and it’s a healthier appetizer than cooking pasta chips in a deep fryer.

This dish is truly for those who enjoy restaurant-prepared meals while staying within budget. It’s a simple, cost-effective appetizer that is absolutely super tasty!

I can say that the seasoning truly makes this dish stand out. The seasoned pasta makes the crunchy pasta chips so delicious.

Serve as an appetizer or snack and watch your friends and family go nuts over who’ll take the last bite.

Are Air Fried Pasta Chips Healthier than Potato Chips?

Well, pasta chips aren’t really part of any typical healthy recipes. They are still high in carbohydrates.

But, they are healthier than potato chips that have been deep fried in oil or deep fried pasta chips.

The best part about air frying is it uses a minimum amount of oil to make pasta chips extra crispy and a tad bit healthier.

What’s the Best Pasta Shape to Use?

When making Air Fryer Pasta Chips, the pasta shapes are the most important!

Choosing the best shape pasta is the first task. Either flat or tubular pasta shapes work best, but not a spiral shape of pasta. Flat shaped pasta chips are easier to hold on to and dip!

There are several types of pasta that work perfectly and make for a great snack. Here’s a short list of perfect pasta options:

  • Rigatoni Pasta
  • Penne Pasta
  • Bow Tie / Farfalle Pasta

Bow tie pasta is probably the most popularly used, but I have found I prefer the rigatoni pasta because it’s easy to dip! It’s a little longer than bow tie pasta, so it’s easier to hold on to.

See how this rigatoni flattens and creates a long chip.

Have Diet Restrictions?

You can also use other types of pasta for this recipe:

  • Gluten free pasta.
  • Go a little healthier with a whole wheat pasta.
  • Vegetarian pasta.

Note: Plant based noodles often have a heavier density, so expect to adjust cook time.

If you are going the plant-based noodle route, consider getting ones that have lentils, rice and chickpeas for ingredients, as they’ll retain the flavor better and still give you that nice air fried crunch in the end.

Kitchen Tools

Here’s everything you’ll need to make pasta chips in the air fryer:

  • Large Pot / Saucepan
  • Colander
  • Air Fryer
  • Large Bowl
  • Spatula

Air Fryer Pasta Chips Ingredients

Here’s the simple ingredients you’ll need to make Air Fryer Pasta Chips

  • 16 oz of Bite-sized Raw Pasta of choice (bowtie, rigatoni, penne)
  • 1 tbsp Kosher Salt
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1/2 tbsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tbsp Italian Seasoning Blend
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated
  • Marinara Sauce (for dipping)
  • Shredded Parmesan cheese (optional topping)

Glass jar of pasta, small bowl of oil, small bowl with garlic and italian seasoning and bowl of grated parmesan cheese.

What Kind of Italian Seasoning Should I Use?

Now, I do have to add that the type of seasoning you choose to use makes a difference in the flavor as well. If you’re looking for a milder chip with not a lot of hot spice, then I would go for an Italian mixture that doesn’t include red pepper flakes or paprika.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to pair these chips as an appetizer such as this easy air fryer flatbread pizza, then consider a seasoning heavy on the rosemary, marjoram, and red pepper flakes.

How to Make Air Fryer Pasta Chips

This recipe needs minimal prep time and the cooking process is extra easy.

Step 1: Fill a large saucepan with water and heat on high heat until water begins to boil.

Step 2: Once water is boiling, add kosher salt. Then pour the raw pasta into the salted water and cook until al dente.

Al dente just means that the pasta is firm and slightly chewy. Cook for approximately 10 minutes to achieve the perfect al dente, but this will vary based on the type of pasta you are using. Follow the package directions for your chosen pasta.

Step 3: Use a colander to drain pasta and place cooked pasta in a medium to large mixing bowl.

Step 4: Add olive oil, Parmesan cheese, and Italian seasoning to the cooked pasta and toss until it is completely coated.

Step 5: Preheat air fryer at 400 degrees F for 2-4 minutes to warm up (depending on your model, your air fryer may need more or less time to preheat).

Step 6: Place the seasoned and cooked pasta into the air fryer basket. Make sure the pasta is mostly in a single layer and not overcrowding the bottom of the basket.

Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may not be able to cook the whole batch at one time. To allow plenty of space for the hot air to move around the pasta, you may need to make a second batch.

Another option is to get one of these stacking trays to place in your air fryer basket. This doubles the vertical space in the basket so you can air fry more at one time!

Step 7: Air fry at 400° for 15 minutes or until it’s crispy and golden brown.

Note: All air fryers are different and cook times may vary. There is no harm in opening the air fryer basket to check the progress, making sure not to overcook. After the first batch, you’ll know how long to set your cook time.

Step 8: Remove air fried pasta chips from air fryer and let cool for 2 to 4 minutes.

Step 9: Top with a few sprinkles of freshly grated cheese.

Step 10: Warm your marinara sauce or use your favorite dipping sauce and serve

Substitutes for Olive Oil

If you’re thinking about exchanging olive oil for something else (or you’ve simply run out and don’t have the time for a grocery run) then make sure to use an oil with an equal grade and texture for air fryer pasta chips.

This means any of the following will do: Canola oil, vegetable oil, avocado oil or sunflower oil.

What is the Best Air Fryer to Use?

Any model you already have will work! If you need a recommendation for a new air fryer, I’d choose either a Ninja Air Fryer or Cosori Air Fryer.

Both have a large capacity air fryer basket. Smaller air fryers work just as well, but you’ll often need to make all your air fryer recipes in several batches.

Don’t Have an Air Fryer? Use the Oven Method.

It’s quicker to make pasta chips in the air fryer, but if you want the same recipe without purchasing a new oven gadget, you can bake them in the oven.

The air fry method is just a little quicker, but oven baking won’t take but a few extra minutes.

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Boil your pasta to al dente.
  3. Drain pasta.
  4. Toss pasta in oil, seasoning and Parmesan cheese. Spread out in a single layer on to the baking sheet.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

How to Serve Air Fryer Pasta Chips

This crunchy snack is delicious right out of the air fryer when they pasta chips are warm, then dipped in your favorite sauce.

Warmed marinara sauce is my top choice but there are other dipping sauces that taste delicious.

You can use Ranch dressing to a cream cheese dip. Use whatever is your favorite dipping sauce!

How to Store Pasta Chips

If you have leftover air fryer pasta chips, you can store the in an airtight container for 2-3 days.

To reheat, preheat air fryer to 370 degrees F and air fry for 3-5 minutes. Just enough to heat them up again without burning.
