How Long Does it Take a Sweet Potato to Cook in an Air Fryer?

The size of your sweet potato will determine how long you should air fry. It takes 30 minutes to cook a medium sized sweet potato in the air fryer.

If you have large sweet potatoes, it could take 40-45 minutes, which is still faster than baking for a minimum of 1 hour in the oven.

Is it Necessary to Soak Sweet Potatoes Before Air Frying?

When making a whole sweet potato, you do not need to soak them before cooking in the Air Fryer.

If you’re making sweet potato fries or wedges, then you would need to soak the cut pieces first to remove excess starch.

Do you need to Pierce Potatoes Before Air Frying?

Yes, you should pierce potatoes with a fork 4-5 times to allow steam to release.

Does Air Frying Sweet Potatoes Remove Nutrients?

Air frying sweet potatoes is a great method for retaining the nutrients and is the same as oven baking.

Overall, the best way to retain nutrients, according to Harvard School of Public Heath, is to boil sweet potatoes. But, air fried sweet potatoes taste way better!

Ingredients

Get more info on these ingredients in the recipe card below.

MEDIUM SWEET POTATOES: The main ingredient of this recipe. We’ll be using a whole sweet potato. Alternatively, you could make sweet potato cubes as we did in our butternut squash recipe.

OLIVE OIL: is used to help crisp up the potato and to act as a nonstick agent. You could swap this out for coconut oil or avocado oil as well.

KOSHER SALT: This coarse salt is perfect for adding flavor.

BUTTER: Since we are using kosher salt, I recommend unsalted butter if you have it. But, there is no issues with using salted butter.

How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes

STEP 1: Run your whole sweet potatoes under water and scrub them clean, removing any root strands or dirt, before drying with paper towels or a kitchen towel. Be sure to pat them dry very well so you don’t steam your potato instead in the fryer. Patting them dry is quicker than letting them air dry.

STEP 2: Using a basting brush, thoroughly cover the potatoes with olive oil and season generously with salt. Use the tines of a fork to puncture the top to let the potato “vent” as it cooks. You could also roll your potatoes in a large bowl of oil for ease.

STEP 3: Place potatoes in air fryer basket in a single layer and cook at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes. Halfway through, at 15 minutes, use tongs to rotate the potatoes and finish cooking.

STEP 4: Remove from the basket (use your tongs again) and let the potatoes cool slightly before slicing with a sharp knife down the center and mashing the inside with a fork. Add butter to the inside and a bit of salt before serving.

How to Store Leftovers

The best way to store any leftover sweet potatoes is in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

How to Reheat Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes

This easy side dish can be warmed back up in the microwave, in the oven, or for best results, you can toss it back in the air fryer for a few minutes to crisp the sweet potato jacket back up while warming up the inside again.

Watch closely to make sure the outside doesn’t over cook.

Tips

Here are a few tips to make really delicious sweet potatoes:

  • Remember, cook times may vary from air fryer to air fryer depending on the make and model as well as the size of your potatoes. Check for doneness after 25 minutes to get an idea of how much longer they need to cook.
  • If you want add a tasty sweet flavor to your air fryer sweet potatoes, doctor it up with cinnamon butter or add cinnamon on top of your regular butter. You can also add mini marshmallows and sprinkle on brown sugar to sweeten up the dish.
  • For natural sweetness, drizzle maple syrup on top once you cut open your potato.
  • You can always add your favorite topping to your potato.
  • Feel free to sprinkle the potato jacket with some garlic powder before placing in the air fryer basket for a more savory flavor.
