What Kind of Vodka is Best for Black Magic Jello Shots?

A sweet vodka is the best liquor. I’m using Vanilla Vodka, but this will work great with a Whipped Vodka or a Cake Vodka.

All three have a sweet flavor that mixes well with the unflavored gelatin and sweetened condensed milk.

How do You Make Black Jello?

To get black jello you just need a few drops of black food coloring. Any jello flavor can be turned black with just a few drops.

Upclose look at the black and purple jello layers.

Kitchen Tools / Equipment

Ingredients

HOT AND COLD WATER: Cold water is used to let the unflavored gelatin bloom before mixing with boiling water to fully dissolve the jello packets.

RASPBERRY JELLO or GRAPE JELLO: Both flavors actually work well. I’m using Raspberry Jello for the two black jello layers in this recipe. I would also think strawberry jello would work well.

UNFLAVORED GELATIN: The middle layer is made with unflavored gelatin. I use Knox Unflavored Gelatin, but local stores often have their own brands as well that you can use.

SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK: Important for texture and to create the sweet flavor of the jello in the middle purple layer.

VANILLA VODKA: Keeping these Halloween treats sweet and boozy.

CHAMBORD: A tasty raspberry liqueur for the purple layer.

PURPLE AND BLACK FOOD COLORING: Food coloring will give these Black Magic Jello Shots their pop of purple color and black jello layers.

BLACK TAPIOCA BOBA PEARLS: Fun garnish on top, these little pearls are what you use in Boba tea. In this recipe, these soft and chewy little beads (usually added to flavored tea recipes) gives this jello shot a really unique look and a great texture. My local grocery store doesn’t carry Boba, so I used these from Amazon. NOTE: You can substitute the Boba with Black Candy Pearls.

BROWN SUGAR: 1/4 cup of Brown Sugar is needed to sweeten the Tapioca Boba.

PURPLE SUGAR PEARLS: For a few pops of color and added flavor.

How to Make Black Magic Jello Shots

This recipe is made with 3 layers of jello. The two black layers are the same and the purple layer is different.

Prep:

Line up the shot glasses on a baking sheet / cookie sheet. This will make moving the jello shots in and out of the refrigerator much easier.

Plastic cups arranged on a baking pan.

Black Jello Layer (Bottom Layer)

The first layer is the black layer.

  1. Boil a cup of water and pour into the raspberry jello mixture. Mix together until fully combined.
  2. Add 2 drops of black food coloring and 1/4 cup of Vanilla Vodka. Mix well.
  3. Fill the plastic jello shot cups 1/3 of the way full and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.

Purple Jello Layer (Second Layer):

This is a creamy and sweet jello mixture.

  1. In a medium size bowl, combine 2 1/4 packages of unflavored gelatin and 1/2 cup cold water. Whisk together and let sit for 5 minutes so the gelatin can bloom.
  2. Boil a cup of water and pour into the jello mixture. Mix together until fully combined.
  3. Add the 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 2 drops of purple food coloring and 1/4 cup of Chambord Raspberry Liqueur. Mix well.
  4. Fill the plastic jello shot cups 1/3 of the way full and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour..

Black Jello Layer (Top Layer):

The top layer is the same as the bottom layer. Follow the same recipe directions for the black jello-o mixture (above) to create the top layer.

  1. Fill the last 1/3 of the jello shot cup, which should fill the cups up the rest of the way but leaving just a little room for toppings.
  2. Let chill for 1-2 hours until fully set.

Garnish:

  1. Start your garnish approximately 20 minutes before you’re ready to serve. Follow the instructions on your package of Black Tapioca Boba. Although Tapioca Boba has a really cool gelatin like texture, it doesn’t have much flavor without adding a sweetener.
  2. Once you’ve made your Boba, strain them and place in a medium bowl. Add in 1/4 cup of brown sugar. Mix together well and let sit for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will sweeten them, adding more flavor to the Black Magic Jello Shots.
  3. Add one tablespoon of Boba on the top of each jello shot. Then sprinkle with purple cake sprinkles.
  4. Display then on a pretty serving plate and serve immediately.

Tips and Variations

  • Use Whipped Cream Vodka instead of Vanilla Vodka for a little bit sweeter flavor.
  • Only add the Boba on top once you are ready to serve. If you put them in the refrigerator, they will loose their jello like texture.
  • Use already sweetened microwaveable Boba for a quicker recipe. You’ll need to use multiple packets.
  • Omit the Boba and just add purple pearl sprinkles and black candy pearls on top.
  • Sprinkle black sugar on top instead of using Boba for another quick jello shot recipe.

How to Store Jello Shots

You can store the jello shots for 2-3 days in the refrigerator with the plastic lids on top. When you’re ready to serve them, make your sweetened Boba on top of each shot.

When it comes to Halloween parties, one of the most popular drinks are jello shots. But why settle for the ordinary when you can have something unique and special like Black Magic Jello Shots? These are a perfect addition to any Halloween party and your guests will love them!
