Best Blue Alcohol Drink: The Blue Hawaiian

Share With Your Friends!

Who doesn’t love a blue alcohol drink? This Blue Curacao drink is fruity, fun and makes for a gorgeous blue drink.

My favorite (so far) is this classic Blue Hawaiian drink. It’s bright and blue, making it a fun tropical drink. The combination of coconut and pineapple flavors with a hint of orange is refreshingly sweet and it tastes like a day at the beach.

The best Blue Curacao drink is the Blue Hawaiian.

The Blue Hawaiian drink gives off the coolest tropical vibe – think cruises, beaches, rolling waves and warm sunny days. It’s as refreshing as the ocean breeze, even if you’re just chillin’ in the backyard. The ambiance it gives off is just as perfect as this tasty blue drink.

It’s certainly at the top of the list for favorite summer cocktail recipes!

What’s in a Blue Hawaiian?

Similar to my favorite creamy Pina Colada recipe, all the flavors come from the islands. Coconut, rum and pineapple yum! You can even make Blue Hawaiian Jello Shots!

The Blue Hawaiian drink recipe calls for two liquors from the tropics. The first is the classic tropical drink liquor, Bacardi Superior (light rum) made in Puerto Rico. The second is Blue Curacao, which (of course) gives the Blue Hawaiian it’s signature hue and comes from the Caribbean island, Curacao.

The Blue Curacao also adds its own unique flavor and alcohol content to the cocktail.

Another delicious Blue Curacao Drink is the Blue Lagoon, which is vibrant blue because the mixers are clear whereas this Blue Hawaiian includes creamy ingredients making it a lighter blue drink.

The primary mixer is pineapple juice. I use canned Dole Pineapple Juice because it’s too much work to juice a pineapple. The last ingredient is the creamy Coco Lopez (also made in Puerto Rico). Coco Lopez is the best cream of coconut on the market. It’s coconut sweet and very creamy.

All these ingredients make a perfect parade of tropical flavors. Exactly what we want in a tropical drink!

What Does Blue Curacao Taste Like?

If you use the most iconic brand, The Genuine Curacao Liqueur, it’ll have a slightly bitter, yet sweet orange flavor.

This bitter orange flavoring comes from the oils extracted from the dried peels of the Laraha orange, which is locally grown in Curacao. The actual fruit from the Laraha orange is too bitter to eat, but the orange peels are put to good use in making this liqueur. The oils from the orange peels are combined with sugar and alcohol (made from sugar cane) along with their own “secret blend of spices” to create the distinctive taste.

There are other brands of blue Curacao liqueurs to choose from, just be aware they are probably made from different types of oranges which may yield a different taste. I’ve found other brands to be sweeter, which is ok, but to keep this Blue Hawaiian from getting too sweet you’ll need to cut back just a little on the cream of coconut.

Does Blue Curacao have Alcohol?

Yes it does. Officially, it can range anywhere between 15% – 40% alcohol per volume. The amount of alcohol all depends on which brand you buy.

The Genuine Curacao Liqueur is 31% per volume. The popular brand by Dekuyper is 24% per volume and Hiram Walker Blue Curacao Liqueur is 15% per volume. As you can see, every brand is different and will have a slightly different flavor as well as alcohol content. But, they will all make beautiful blue drinks!

I’m a fan of more alcohol, so this recipe calls for the The Genuine Curacao Liqueur.

Blue Hawaiian Cocktail Tips:

  • Cream of Coconut goes a long way. Too much can make your drink syrupy.
  •  You can easily turn this into a frozen drink. Combine ingredients in a blender, add 1 cup of ice and blend.
  • Not traditional, but you can make a Blue Hawaiian with Coconut Rum. Substitute Light Rum with Coconut Rum, reduce pineapple juice to 2 oz. and omit the cream of coconut. Similar, but definitely different.
