Damiana Liqueur Margarita an Aphrodisiac?
If you’re a fan of the little town called Todos Santos, about 45 minutes up the coast from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, you might know this place. It’s a little bar right across from the Hotel California called Tequila Sunrise Bar and if you indulged in a margarita there, did you experience a rise in your libido? Do I have your attention now?
The owner of Tequila Sunrise Bar is a handsome older man named Emmanuel and I sat down with him to chat about his famous margarita. What makes it famous? It’s made with a regional liqueur called Damiana and this special ingredient supposedly has the qualities of an aphrodisiac.
Damiana is an herbal-based liqueur made from the damiana herb, which is found only in Baja California. Its signature bottle shape is said to be fashioned after an Incan goddess.
There are some distributors that carry Damiana in the US, but availability is limited. A quick Google search yielded several options for online purchasing.
Emmanuel’s famous libation is made with fresh ingredients and each is poured into the margarita glass in layers. It is never shaken or stirred and is served with a straw. I had strict instructions to use the straw only to stir the drink and to drink directly from the glass.
And what happened after my husband and I finished our love-inducing drinks? Well… I’ll never tell!
