What Are Hot Chocolate Bombs?

If you haven’t made hot chocolate bombs before, then you’re in for a treat! You’ll find they are also called hot cocoa bombs and are the same thing. Hot chocolate bombs are a rich, sweet candy coated ball filled with hot cocoa powder and sometimes other sweet goodies.

There is an outer candy shell that typically tastes like white chocolate, which is filled with hot cocoa mix and marshmallows, which makes it a chocolate ball of goodness. The outer layer melts away and turns a cup of hot milk into delicious hot chocolate.

What is so much fun about hot chocolate bombs is that you can make all kinds of flavors and create your own favorite hot chocolate recipe by adding ingredients such as a variety of chopped candies.

How do Hot Chocolate Bombs Work?

Simply drop a hot cocoa bomb in to a mug of hot milk and watch it burst open, releasing the goodies inside. This is what makes them so fun.

Or just as easy, place the hot chocolate bomb in the bottom of your favorite mug and pour the warm milk on top. Simply stir and enjoy!

What are Candy Melts?

Candy melts are used for melting and decorating sweet treats. The typically imitate the flavor of vanilla white chocolate, but there are a few other flavors available such as dark chocolate and peppermint white chocolate.

The actual cocoa is removed and most have powdered milk added in, along with other ingredients to taste like chocolate while easily melting and molding.

Candy melts have a smooth texture when melted and the melts have the best results in holding it’s shape once set.

Unlike real chocolate that doesn’t melt smoothly and often will crumble, which is why candy melts are used to make delicious treats like hot chocolate bombs and cake pops. They are easier to use and still satisfy the chocolate sweet tooth.

Here’s the list of 5 simple ingredients to make Grinch hot chocolate bombs:

How to Make Grinch Hot Chocolate Bombs

Here are the step-by-step directions. These are fairly easy hot chocolate bombs and move quickly once you get the hang of it.

Step 1: Melt green candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Set the microwave to half power and heat in 30 second intervals. Stir the melted chocolate between each heating session. Continue until the green chocolate melts are melted completely and smooth.

Step 2: Next, add the green candy melts to the silicone mold. Scoop a large spoon full into the bottom of the mold and spread it up the sides of the mold with the back of a spoon. Create one thin layer.

Step 3: Place in freezer for 10 minutes to set.

Tip: You can put your silicone mold on a baking sheet to easily move in and out of the refrigerator so the molds don’t bend and possibly crack the molds.

Step 4: Take the silicone mold out of the freezer and add a thin second coat again with the back of the spoon. Mostly focusing on where you can see through the green mold. You want the bomb to be thick enough to stay together but not too thick.

Step 5: Return to the freezer for another 10 minutes.

Step 6: Gently remove the hardened molds by slow pushing the half spheres out from underneath. Place on a plate.

Step 7: Heat a frying pan on low heat.

Tip: You can also use a small plate. Place a small plate in the microwave for 2 minutes. Remove from the microwave (very hot plate, use hot pads) and use it in the same way in the following steps as we’re using a hot pan.

Step 8: Place the open side of the half sphere (rim down) onto the pan (or hot plate) to lightly melt and even out the edges or the rim.

Step 9: Quickly Add 2 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix to the bomb.

Step 10: Add about 8-10 mini marshmallows.

Open half sphere with hot cocoa mix inside and 8 mini marshmallows inside.

Step 11: Take a second empty sphere and melt the rim. Place evenly on top of the half sphere filled with hot chocolate mix and mini marshmallows. Gently hold together for a few seconds until the two spheres are sealed together.

How to Decorate Grinch Hot Chocolate Bombs

Step 1: In a separate microwave safe bowl, melt the white candy melts.

Step 2: Scoop the melted white chocolate into a piping bag or a sandwich baggie. Snip a small corner piece of the bag off. Then drizzle the white chocolate over the top of the Grinch hot cocoa bombs.

Step 3: Place a red heart sprinkle on top of the bombs to represent the Grinch’s heart.

How Long do Hot Chocolate Bombs Last?

Just like candy, these Grinch hot chocolate bombs will last for up to 1-2 months if stored in an airtight container. Because there are no creams, milk or any other ingredients that spoil quickly, you can make them pretty far ahead of time

How to Store Grinch Hot Chocolate Bombs

Make sure to wrap each one in wax paper or parchment paper so there is no chance of them sticking to each other. Keep in an airtight container and these can be kept at room temperature.
