Air Fryer Onion Rings Ingredients

These homemade onion rings in the air fryer make a flaky, crispy outside by using the following ingredients:

LARGE SWEET ONION: This is the type of onion I prefer for onion rings. There’s just a hint of sweetness, but you can always try other options. Pretty much any onion will make good air fryer onion rings. It all depends on your taste preferences.

ALL PURPOSE FLOUR: The flour is mixed in with several of the seasonings as the first layer of your onion ring breading.

CORNSTARCH: Cornstarch when mixed with flour creates a crispier coating.

SPICES: These will give the air fryer onion rings a delicious taste. The spices are mixed in with the flour for the first seasoned layer of breading with flavor. You can also add a dash of onion powder if you want more onion flavors. Here’s the list of spices in this recipe:

  • Garlic Powder
  • Paprika
  • Salt
  • Pepper

LARGE EGG: You will dredge your onion rings in an egg wash once it’s coated in the flour mixture and will help the Panko breadcrumbs stick to the onions.

PANKO BREADCRUMBS: Use your favorite flavor of the panko breadcrumbs mixture. You can also use regular breadcrumbs, but your Panko bread crumbs will turn out crispier on your hot onion rings.

COOKING SPRAY: I prefer to use olive oil non stick cooking spray. You can also use avocado oil spray or coconut oil spray.

How To Make Homemade Onion Rings in the Air Fryer

Alright, grab some bowls and your air fryer and let’s make these homemade onion rings in the air fryer!

STEP 1: Start by slicing your large onion into rings of thick slices and set aside.

STEP 2: In a small bowl, whisk the egg. You’ll typically need 1 egg per onion.

STEP 3: In a medium bowl add flour, cornstarch, garlic, paprika, salt and pepper. Mix all together.

STEP 4: Grab a third bowl and add your panko.

STEP 5: Start by dipping the raw onion rings in the flour mixture.

One raw onion ring in a bowl of flour.

STEP 6: Take the cornstarch flour coated onion rings and coat them in the egg mixture. Do this gently, as you don’t want to knock off all of the flour.

TIP: You can do several onion slices at a time, I’m just showing a single onion ring in these process photos so you can easily see the steps.

STEP 7: The last coating is to dip the onion slice into the panko breadcrumbs. Cover completely.

STEP 8: Preheat the air fryer to 360 F. This will take 1-2 minutes depending on your air fryer model.

STEP 9: Place onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket and spray with olive oil cooking oil.

TIP: Make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket, but it’s OK if the onion rings slightly touch or overlap on a little spot because you will need to flip them, so that should ensure all parts of the onion rings are exposed to the hot air. You can also nest them by putting a smaller onion ring inside a larger one.

There is this great air fryer accessory you can also use to take advantage of the vertical space. It’s an air fryer rack that let’s you put two layers of onion rings (or whatever appetizer you’re making). They come in various sizes so you should be able to find one to fit your air fryer.

STEP 10: Cook for 6 minutes, flipping the onion rings over at the 3-minute mark. Spray with oil again and finish air frying to cook both sides evenly.

TIP: Cook time will vary in different air fryer models. Make sure to time you first batch as well as check on the crispiness during the cooking process. Adjust accordingly and you’ll have perfect onion rings on subsequent batches.

STEP 11: Working in batches, repeat until all coated onion rings have been air fried. If you are working on several batches, place the onion rings in the oven on warm and hold.

How Thick Do You Cut Onion Rings?

For homemade onion rings in the air fryer , you can make them however thick you want. I find that cutting in 1/2″ thick slices makes for yummy onion rings. If you like skinny rings, make sure to watch the cook time, as they will crisp up faster.

What Are The Best Onions For Onion Rings?

Use sweet onions for best results. I have found that onions that are sweeter and less pungent are perfect. You can use:

  • Sweet Onions (best option)
  • White onions
  • Yellow onions
  • Red onions
  • Walla Walla onions
  • Vidalia onions

Keep in mind that different onions will make different tasting onion rings.

What Dipping Sauce Goes Good with Onion Rings?

If you like to dip your onion rings, pick your favorite dipping sauce and give it a whirl. Some popular ideas are:

Storing Homemade Air Fryer Onion Rings

The best way to enjoy these air fryer onion rings is right when they’re fresh from the fryer. Wait a minute or two until they’re not too hot and enjoy them. The longer they sit out, the faster they’ll lose their crispness.

I don’t recommend storing them for long term. But if you have a few leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container for a day. You can also freeze homemade onion rings in the air fryer for up to 2 months.

How To Reheat Onion Rings in the Air Fryer?

If you are wanting to reheat your onion rings to bring them back to their original crispiness, I recommend you cook at 360 degrees F for 4-5 minutes, checking crispiness and warmth halfway through.

Never microwave your onion rings to reheat them, this will make for soggy onion slices.

If reheating from frozen, you’ll need to add a few extra minutes of cook time. Remember that each air fryer make and model will vary with cook time recommendations. Refer to your Owner’s Manual and check on your food several times as it cooks.

Homemade Onion Rings in the Air Fryer are the perfect side dish to serve your family for almost any occasion. Toss some in the air fryer while you’re whipping up the rest of dinner for a lovely appetizer or side dish and see how quickly everyone gobbles them up!
