What are Hot Chocolate Bombs?

They are a hollow candy or chocolate sphere made with melted chocolate or candy. Then filled with all kinds of goodies to make a delicious cup of hot chocolate.

Common fillers are marshmallows, chopped candy pieces and hot cocoa mix before being sealed and served with a hot cup of milk.

Once the chocolate bomb is dropped into a heated cup of milk, the outside candy or chocolate sphere will melt and the inside goodies will be released. Simply stir for a tasty treat for any occasion.

Hot Chocolate Bomb Molds

I’ve found that while some may try to do away with using molds altogether, it is far easier to just buy sphere molds! Some suggest using cupcake or muffin pans or even empty glasses instead, but the fact that silicone molds are cheap, there is no reason not to use them.

Plus, after seeing how gorgeous these turn out, you’re going to want to make more. So, make it easy on yourself and buy a couple of silicone molds.

Step 3: Add a spoon full of the melted candy into each of the mold cavities. Then use the back of a spoon or pastry brush to coat the mold with the melted candy, making sure cover the entire inside of the mold. Be sure to get a spread the melted candy all the way up the sides of the mold.

Tip: Place your silicone molds on a baking sheet (this just helps to support the mold and make it easier to move them).

Step 4: Place coated molds in the freezer for 5 minutes.

Step 5: Repeat the same process in step 3 to add another coat of melted candy. Make sure to evenly spread the candy up the sides of the mold and freeze for an additional 5 minutes until hardened.

Step 6: Now, remove the large plate you put in the freezer in step 1 and the coated molds from the freezer. Gently remove each candy shell from the mold and place the spheres onto the chilled plate.

Step 7: Heat your small plate in the microwave for 2 minutes.

Step 8: Remove the small plate from the microwave (careful, it’s hot!) and place a half sphere upside down on top of the hot plate. Moving it around to slightly melt the half sphere rim.

Step 9: Fill the empty sphere with 1 tablespoon cocoa mix.

To serve, heat 6 ounces milk (preferred!) or you can use hot water.

Tips for Making Hot Cocoa Bombs

Here are a few key tips:

  • Always use good quality candy melts for best flavor and texture.
  • Ensure the candy melts are completely melted before applying it into the sphere molds to make sure it easily coats.
  • Don’t remove the candy spheres to early from the freezer. Make sure the candy is fully hardened or the sphere will warp when removing it from the molds.
  • When serving, use whole milk for the best results. Whole milk makes for a truly creamy drink.
