Mike Miller helped form The Boat Drunks back in 1999 and retired from the band from 2008 to 2013. During that time, he lived aboard his sailboat and Mike tells about his experience that led him to write the title song from his album Perspective. Mike continues now to perform with the Boat Drunks, who have won several Trop Rock Music Awards and play a steady succession of gigs around the country. Here is Mike Miller’s story of how he came to write “Perspective”
For those of you who don’t know, I spent five years living and cruising aboard a thirty-eight foot sailboat.
One night I was doing an overnight solo passage. I was about 70 miles off-shore and it was a very clear and fairly calm night. The moon had already set and the only light came from the stars and my navigation lights.
I had the auto pilot doing the steering and I walked up onto the foredeck and lay down with my head at the base of the mast. As I was watching the mast swaying back and forth across the night sky, I thought to myself: “I’m the only person in the world with this view right now.”
I went on to apply this thought to other circumstances where people’s point of view influences their interpretation of what they see.
