What Type of Apples are Best to Use?

I like to use a sweet and sour apples as a mix. For this recipe I used:

  • 2 Granny Smith
  • 3 Gala

Other Apples You Can Use:

  • Pink Lady
  • Honey Crisp

Note: Golden Delicious can work, but watch closely as they will soften quickly.

Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Small Saucepan or Medium Saucepan with a lid
  • Medium bowl
  • Sharp Knife
  • Small Bowl
  • Spoon or Spatula
  • Measuring Cups
  • Serving Dish

Ingredients

Apples: Peel, core, and chop your apples into small pieces.

Brown Sugar: Pack the brown sugar into the measuring cup.

Granulated Sugar: The white sugar just adds a bit more sweetness.

Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon will be used for the apple pie filling in the dip and the coating on chips.

Cornstarch: This is going to be the cornstarch slurry that thickens the base of the dip.

Lemon Juice: Lemon juice is going to add a little citrus to the dip, but also help prevent the apples from browning.

Tortillas: I use flour tortillas for this recipe, but you could also use wheat flour tortilla chips if you’re looking to save a few calories.

How to Make Apple Pie Dip

Apple Pie Dip

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the apple cubes, brown sugar, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and lemon juice.

Heat a large skillet or saucepan over medium-high heat. Pour the apple mixture and water into the pan. Bring to a boil, then cover the pan with a lid and reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer until the apples are very tender, about 10 minutes (the exact cooking time depends on the apples).

Remove a ½ cup of the cooking liquid from the pan and whisk in the cornstarch. Pour the liquid with the cornstarch back into the apple mixture and stir well.

Allow the apple pie dip to cook over medium-low heat until thickened.

Once thickened, remove from the heat. This recipe can be served warm or chilled.

Cinnamon Sugar Chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Prep your baking sheet with cooking spray or parchment paper.

In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and cinnamon.

Spray both sides of each tortilla with non-stick cooking spray, then sprinkle both sides with the cinnamon sugar mixture.

Cut each tortilla into 8 wedges and lay them out in a single layer on baking sheets (bake in batches if necessary)

Bake the chips at 350 F for 9-12 minutes, until golden brown and crisp.

Cool the chips on wire cooling racks and serve at room temperature.

Recipe Tips

  • Stay away from apples not typical for baking. As the apples break down they will soften and if you use too soft of an apple it will become mushy.
  • One big tip is to slice the apples in similar sizes so you get an even texture on the mixture.
  • Be careful not to overcook the apples or it will break them down too much.
  • Make sure the oil is hot oil before you fry the chips up if you make the pie crust chips on the stovetop. If you prefer, you can also bake them in the oven.
  • Bake up a 9-inch pie dish with a pie crust and bake up. Then once cooled break apart and use for dipping in the apple mixture.

Variations

  • If you want add some apple pie spice in replace of the cinnamon in the recipe. This will give it more of an apple pie flavor.
  • Stir in 4 ounces of cream cheese for a cheesecake twist. Or serve some of the pie dips on top of a block of cream cheese for dipping.
  • Use graham crackers, cinnamon sugar chips, cinnamon pita chips, bagel chips, wheat tortilla chips, vanilla wafers, fresh fruit, and more to dip.
  • Make an oat and brown sugar streusel topping for added crunch to the fun dip.
  • Drizzle on some caramel sauce for a tasty caramel apple pie dip.

If you want to go over the top yum with this dessert dip, top it with this decadent Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream.

Can I Customize this Recipe to Suit Dietary Restrictions?

You can adjust a few of the ingredients to fit your personal dietary needs.

  • For a sugar substitute, you can use artificial sugars.
  • Another customization is to swap out the cornstarch for arrowroot to use as a thickening agent.

Can I use Apple Pie Dip as a Filling for Other Desserts?

The beauty of this easy dessert is you can use any of the leftovers for filling in crepes, topping on pancakes or waffles, or even creating a layered dessert.

Feel free to try out the leftover apple mixture in other dishes. This recipe can easily be used to sweeten up a dessert or breakfast.

How to Store Leftovers

You can expect your dip to last 3-4 days in the fridge in an airtight container. This is a fun dessert and makes for a perfect snack. Eat it cold or warm it up in the microwave.

If you want you can freeze leftovers for 1-2 months. Then thaw in the fridge and use as you wish. Just know the apples will be a bit softer in texture once you go to eat them after being frozen.

Now you can enjoy the flavors of your favorite apple pie but with a dippable twist! This Apple Pie Dip is perfect if you love all things apple and makes a dessert dip that’s fun to share.
