Kitchen Equipment Needed
- Large Bowl
- Medium Microwave-safe bowl
- Spatula or Spoon
- Measuring Cups
- Parchment Paper
- Cookie Sheet
- 2 Large Zip Top Baggies
Ingredients
CHEX CEREAL: I used corn chex for this but feel free to use a rice chex or even wheat chex if you prefer.
WHITE CHOCOLATE CHIPS: Instead of the traditional milk chocolate or dark chocolate I opted for a white chocolate chip.
PEANUT BUTTER: Creamy peanut butter pairs with the chocolate to create the perfect creamy base for this fun Easter treat.
BUTTER: Use real butter to whip up the melted chocolate mixture. Margarine can make it have a greasy texture.
POWDERED SUGAR: For coating the cereal with sweetness. This is the traditional coating for puppy chow.
PASTEL M&Ms: As the spring season arrives you’ll be able to pick up pastel Easter candy to add a pop of color to this dessert.
MINI MARSHMALLOWS: Now for a twist I love adding in miniature marshmallows for a sweet and fluffy texture.
SPRINKLES: Grab any Easter-themed sprinkles to add a pop of color to the snack mix.
How to Make Easter Puppy Chow
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper, and set aside. Pour cereal in a large bowl and set aside.
In a microwave-safe bowl, heat chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter for 1 minute. Stir well, and heat again for 30 seconds, stirring until smooth.
Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal. Toss until well-coated.
Divide the powdered sugar between two gallon zip top bags. Add half of the coated Chex cereal into the first bag. Shake well to coat the cereal in the sugar. Once well coated, pour the cereal onto your parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat this with the other bag of sugar and the remaining coated cereal.
Allow the cereal to set for one hour then add the M&Ms, marshmallows, and sprinkles.
Pour the Easter puppy chow into a serving container.
Tips
- When melting the chocolate make sure to stir often to prevent the chocolate from burning. Watch closely, as each microwave is different.
- Ensure the Chex cereal is coated evenly in the chocolate mixture before you coat it in the powdered sugar.
Variations
- Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to add more vanilla flavor to the puppy chow mixture.
- Use a colored candy melt for added color in stead of the white chocolate. Pastel pink candy melts or purple would be pretty.
- Add in other seasonal chocolate candy to the Chex mix for a fun look.
Why is it Called Puppy Chow?
The Puppy Chow name came about because this snack mix resembled the look of dog food or dog kibble. The name stuck and has been known as a delicious food for humans only to enjoy.
It’s also know as muddy buddies and for Easter these type snack mixes may be called bunny bait. A fun twist on the puppy chow name!
Can I Freeze Puppy Chow?
Freezing puppy chow will make the powdered sugar coating becomes soggy, and it can then make the cereal a bit stale and soft. I do not recommend freezing leftover puppy chow.
Can I Make Puppy Chow Without Peanut Butter?
Feel free to swap the peanut butter with your favorite nut butter if you would like. Just know that depending on the texture of the nut butter you might need to use less nut butter compared to a peanut butter if it has more liquid.
How to Store Leftovers
Store the snack mix in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 weeks. Then you can serve up for holiday gatherings, place in Easter baskets, etc.
