How to Make Puking Pumpkin Chips and Salsa

Here’s the simple steps to make your Halloween chips and salsa:

STEP 1: If you’re making homemade salsa, follow my easy, fresh blender salsa recipe.

STEP 2: Cut off the top of your pumpkin, remove the pumpkin guts and seeds and discard.

STEP 3: Using a knife, carve a pumpkin face into the pumpkin. Instead of a toothy smile, make a large open mouth that reaches close to the bottom of the pumpkin.

STEP 4: Place your small pumpkin on your large platter.

STEP 5: Pour the salsa on the large platter where the salsa looks like it’s coming out of the pumpkin’s mouth.

STEP 6: Place the tortilla chips around the tray and pumpkin.

STEP 7: I like to place the top of the pumpkin back on so you don’t see inside the pumpkin when people are dipping.

How do you Carve a Pumpkin for Halloween?

This is where this stainless steel pumpkin carving kit comes in handy.

  1. Use a sharp knife and cut the top off the pumpkin. Cutting up and down, making a circle around the stem. Remove the top of the pumpkin and set it aside.
  2. Using a spoon or your hand reach in and remove the seeds and the strings within the pumpkin. This takes a bit of work depending on how much is inside the pumpkin.
  3. Once cleaned out then you can carve the pumpkin as you wish. I use a pen to lightly draw my pumpkin face on the outside then follow the lines with your knife.
  4. You can discard the seeds or rinse them off in cold water and use this delicious recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds for a snack later!

Tips

  • Before carving your pumpkin I like to wash the outside of my pumpkin with a little dish soap and cold water. This will help remove any dirt or debris on the pumpkin.
  • Make sure to remove the pumpkin seeds and guts out of the pumpkin before you start carving.
  • Place the pumpkin stem top to the side as you will place it back on once assembled. Don’t throw it away.
  • Add the salsa right before serving too keep the pumpkin from to getting soggy.

Variations

  • You are welcome to carve any type of face on your pumpkin as you would like. Get creative or keep it basic, but the key is to have the large open mouth to get the puking pumpkin affect.
  • Swap the salsa with guacamole or another type of dip that you might want to serve up.
  • Or make several puking pumpkins and serve multiple Halloween chips and dips!
  • If you’re using store-bought salsa, dress it up to your liking. You can add a splash of hot sauce to the dip to make it spicier or tone down the tomato flavors with some garlic salt.
  • Add some lime wedges around the edges or in a small bowl so guests can sprinkle lime juice on top of the salsa for added tangy flavor.

How far in Advance Can you Carve a Pumpkin?

Carve this pumpkin 1 day ahead at the most of when you are going to serve.

Since you are putting food inside the pumpkin I recommend placing the pumpkin in a container and storing it in the fridge.

This will keep your pumpkin from drying out or spoiling so it looks fresh for your Halloween party.

How to Store Leftovers

You can save any extra salsa and place it in a sealed container and store it in the fridge.

Use the leftover salsa for chips and dip or to top Mexican dishes, etc.

Be sure to discard the pumpkin or wash it really well so there are no remnants of salsa to spoil and use it for a decoration.

This Puking Pumpkin makes a really cool Halloween appetizer! It’s one fun way to make a Halloween themed party stand out, but also budget-friendly and easy to throw together. Win-Win!

Happy Halloween!
