Kitchen Equipment Needed
- Wax Paper or Parchment Paper
- Double boiler or Medium Microwave-Safe Bowl
- Baking Sheet / Cookie Sheet (great for transferring treats around the kitchen easily)
Ingredients
RICE KRISPY TREATS: I bought the individually wrapped premade Rice Krispy treats, but you can always make a homemade batch if you’d like!
CANDY MELTS: You will use a mix of colors. I used black, purple, and orange candy melts. Wilton candy melts are the brand we typically use if we can get our hands on them (my grocery store only carries a few colors, so I grab them from Amazon here: Wilton Candy Melts Single Bags – All Colors). If not, Michaels sells a lot of colorful candy melts.
CANDY EYES: I used large and small candy eyes for the monsters. You will find large candy eyes and then some smaller candy eyes which really give these monsters dimension. Here’s a two bottle set to get both sizes.

How to Make Monster Rice Krispie Treats
If you’re making homemade rice krispies, make these first.
Melt each color candy melt as directed on the package. I do them on defrost for 1:30 seconds, stopping every 30 second intervals and stir. Continue to heat with stirring until they are melted. You can also use a melting pot or double boiler. Clean your pot or bowl before melting a new color.
Dip the rice krispie treats into the candy melts (a little more than half way) and place them onto parchment paper.
Place eyes in different patterns on top, using a variety of sizes for the candy googly eyes. Be sure to add the candy eyeballs before the candy sets.
Let the melting wafers dry and serve!
Recipe Tips
- If your candy melts seem too thick you can add a little vegetable oil or shortening to the chocolate. This will help create a smoother texture. I only do 1/2 teaspoon to start. Stir well – it might have clumps at first, but stirring well will smooth the texture.
- When heating make sure to do short heat cycle intervals to ensure you don’t overheat the chocolate as it can cause it to seize up.
- If you choose to use white chocolate chips or a chocolate bar you will need to temper the chocolate first. Add gel food coloring to get your desired colors.
Variations
- Make homemade Rice Krispie treats instead of using store-bought ones. Then slice them into rectangles once the homemade Rice Krispies are set up.
- Have fun with the colors of melted candy melts you use. Any colors will work, add some green candy melts to add more fun colors to your rice krispie monsters.
- Use any flavor of rice krispie treats you want, such as chocolate or fruity pebble flavor. You will find that any flavor works and if you want to flavors other than the classic Rice Krispies.
More Candy Topping Ideas

- Gummy Halloween-themed items
- Mini marshmallows
Can I add a Stick to make these into a Treat Popsicle?
Simply buy the sticks for cake pops and stick them into the Rice Krispie treat.
I like to dip my stick into a little bit of the melted candy and then push it into the bottom portion of the treat. This ensures it stays on the stick and won’t slide off.
I typically use some white melting chocolate that way you don’t see the melted chocolate at the bottom of the stick.
How to Store Leftovers
Store these Halloween treats in an airtight container on the counter. These rice cereal treats can store for 1-2 weeks easily. This is a great make-ahead dessert for a Halloween party you want to plan ahead for.
You can also freeze these Halloween rice krispie treats if you don’t eat them all.
You can individually wrap them with plastic wrap and place them in a freezer container. Freeze for 3-4 months. When ready to eat, simply thaw at room temperature and enjoy.
These Monster Rice Krispie Treats are a favorite recipe! They are delicious any time of year and make a great after-school snack. The kids love the rice krispie treat monsters even when it isn’t Halloween season!
