Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Food Processor or Rolling Pin (for crushing chocolate sandwich cookies)
  • Large Ziploc Bag (if using rolling pin to crush cookies)
  • Parchment Paper or Wax Paper
  • Cookie Sheet
  • Stand Mixer (optional) or Spatula
  • Small Cookie Scoop
  • 3 Microwave-Safe Bowls
  • Spoon
  • Airtight Container for Storing

Ingredients

PACKAGE OF OREOS: I use regular chocolate Oreos for the base of the Oreo cookie balls.

CREAM CHEESE: One package of softened cream cheese. I find that full-fat cream cheese makes the richest cookie balls.

CHOCOLATE OR CANDY MELTS: I use a variety of colors to make fun and different colored small balls for the monsters. You can color white chocolate or buy pre-colored candy melts. I’m using these Orange Candy Melts, Vibrant Green Candy Melts and Lavender Candy Melts

CANDY EYES: Add edible candy eyes for the top of the balls to give them a monster eye look. Here’s the candy eyes I’m using

HALLOWEEN SPRINKLES: Use any colors you like to make the hair on top of the monsters. I’m using these Halloween Jimmie sprinkles

How to Make Monster Oreo Balls

STEP 1: Place Oreos in a food processor and pulse until Oreos become fine crumbs. Alternatively, you can place Oreos in a large ziplock bag and use a rolling pin to break them up (you’ll really need to crush them!).

STEP 2: Pour the Oreo crumbs into your mixing bowl. Add softened cream cheese and stir together. If you want to use a stand mixer, mix on low-speed until a soft dough forms.

Clear bowl with oreo cookie crumbs and a softened block of cream cheese.

STEP 3: Roll the mixture into equal-sized balls. It’s easiest to use a cookie scoop. Then place them in a single layer on your prepared cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

STEP 4: Place in the freezer for 1 hour, or until firm.

STEP 5: Pour 1 cup of candy melts from each bag of into a separate bowls. Microwave one bowl at a time in 20-second intervals, stirring in-between each heating session, until all candy pieces are melted and smooth.

STEP 6: Dip chilled Oreo balls in the melted candy coating until fully coated. Let any excess chocolate or candy melts drip off back into the bowl.
TIP: If the melted candy starts to become too thick, put the bowl back in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to thin out again.

STEP 7: Immediately add an eyeball to the side, then sprinkles on the top for the monster “hair”. Place it on the parchment paper to set. Repeat until all of your monster Oreo balls are coated in various colors and decorated.

STEP 8: Allow the candy coating to set before serving.

Tips

  • Make sure to use softened cream cheese so you get a nice creamy pairing. You just want it soft enough to mix well with the crushed Oreo cookie crumbs.
  • You can use a rolling pin to crush the Oreos in a sealed bag. Or opt for a food processor. You just want a sand-like texture to the crushed regular Oreo Cookies.
  • Any chocolate coating works for these Monster Oreo Balls! Use your favorite. You can also melt white chocolate and add food color.
  • You will only want to keep these balls at room temperature for 2 hours, and then they will need to be refrigerated to ensure they don’t start melting.
  • Make sure to put the eyeballs on when the chocolate is still wet.
  • I find using a cookie scoop for the Oreo cream cheese balls helps to create evenly sized Halloween Oreo truffles.

Variations

  • If you’re using white candy melts, you’ll need green food coloring, orange food coloring and violet or purple food coloring to make these Halloween oreo balls.
  • You can use thin Oreos, flavored Oreos of choice, or any brand of chocolate sandwich cookies you want.
  • Add only one color of Halloween sprinkles on  top of each one. This will create fun designs and make your monster oreo balls all look different.
  • These pumpkin truffles will look great with the monsters. It’s another cute way to decorate Halloween Oreo balls.

Can I use Almond Bark?

You can use almond bark for Monster Oreo Balls. Sometimes almond bark will seize up depending on the type of food coloring you use. So, use an oil based food color.

I do recommend tempering white chocolate and adding food coloring or buying candy melts that are already colored.

Why is my Chocolate Chunky and Not Smooth?

Sometimes you will find that if you overheat chocolate it can make the chocolate thick.

In this case, you can add in about 1/2 teaspoon of shortening and it will create a smoother texture to the melted chocolate.

You can also use coconut oil for thinning out the chocolate and allow it to be smooth.

How to Store Leftovers

Any Halloween Oreo balls need to be stored in the fridge in a sealed container. The balls will last about a week in the fridge.

Or you can freeze these Monster Oreo Balls for 3-4 months. Just place them in an airtight freezer container and then when you are ready to eat the monster truffles simply thaw in the fridge overnight.

Monster Oreo Balls are so much fun, easy to make and super cute! Perfect for fun Halloween treats.
