Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Food Processor (works best!) or Rolling Pin (to crush the cookies)
  • Ziplock bag (if using a rolling pin to make your cookie crumbs)
  • Cookie Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Cookie Scoop
  • Double Boiler or Microwave-safe bowl
  • Fork or Spoon

Ingredients

OREOS– Grab a package of classic Oreos, double stuff or even thin Oreos (the choice is yours) for this Oreo balls recipe. I’m using the classic Oreos.

CREAM CHEESE – Room temperature softened cream cheese is needed to mix well with the crushed cookies.

CANDY MELTS – White candy melts are what I used for the melted white chocolate I dipped the balls in. I like these Super White Candy Melts so they don’t have a cream-ish color.

RED GEL – Use a red gel writing pen for the lines on the eyeballs. Here’s a great red gel if you don’t find it at your local store.

CANDY EYES – Find these edible eye decorations in the baking aisle at the grocery store or grab these here on Amazon.

How to Make Oreo Eyeballs

Follow these step-by-step directions to learn how to make chocolate covered Oreos:

Place a whole package of Oreo cookies in a large bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Or if you own a food processor you can crush into fine crumbs that way.
Rolling pin with oreo cookies in a zip top bag.
Pour the crushed cookies into a bowl and add the cream cheese. Stir to mix until the ingredients are well combined.

Use a tablespoon or cookie scoop to form the mixture into 30 balls.

Place the balls on a flat board or cookie sheet pan and chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour.

How to Dip Oreo Balls into White Chocolate

Once the Oreo balls are solid, melt the candy according to the package instructions, either in the microwave or in a double broiler. In the double broiler, continuously stir until the chocolate is smooth. If microwaving, heat in 10-15-second intervals, stirring in between each heating session until you reach the right consistency.

Dip each ball in the candy until fully coated, this is easier with the help of a fork or a spoon. Shake off any excess chocolate. Then transfer the ball to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

Return the candy-coated Oreo balls to the refrigerator to chill for another 30 minutes, until the candy has hardened.

How to Decorate Oreo Eyeballs

Starting at the top of each Oreo ball, draw lines down the sides with red decorating gel to give them the bloodshot eyes look.

Press the candy eyeballs onto the top of the gel right in the center of each coated Oreo cookie ball.

Serve immediately or chill until ready to serve.

Variations

  • Use almond bark or white chocolate chips in replace of white candy melts.
  • Use red candy melts to pipe on the red lines if you don’t use gel.
  • Gummy lifesavers can be placed on top of the Oreo balls and then place melted chocolate candy melts in the center or even a mini M&M to mimic the eyeball for a gummy eyeball.
  • Draw squiggle lines in edible red pen on the Oreo eyeballs with a food marker instead of gel.

Tips

  • Be sure to let your Oreo balls fully chill, or when you dip then in the chocolate it will melt the balls.
  • A cookie scoop will give you even sized Oreo cookie balls
  • You can melt chocolate in a double boiler or opt to heat it up in a microwave-safe bowl for your candy-coated Oreo cookie balls.
  • Try an Oreo cookie that is flavored. Mint, peanut butter, Golden Oreos, or your favorite flavor.

Can I use Other Types of Cookies for Oreo Eyeballs?

You are welcome to use other types of cookies for this recipe.

Any type of sandwich cookies, different Oreo cookie flavors or nutter butters will work.

What to do if the Melted Chocolate Seizes?

If you over microwave the candy melts, the chocolate will seize, making it hard to work with. In this event, add in one tablespoon of vegetable oil or coconut oil and stir together.

This will thin the melted chocolate candy melts and smooth it out. At first, there will be lumps, so continue to stir until they are gone.

Do Oreo Balls Need to Be Refrigerated?

Yes, always store Oreo balls in the refrigerator. Since they are made with cream cheese, these should not be left out for long periods of time.

You can store these easy eyeball cookies in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Or you can freeze Oreo eyeballs for 2-3 months. Then simply thaw in the fridge overnight and then enjoy the Oreo balls once thawed fully.
