Recipe Variations

Here are easy ways to change up your ice cream float!

  • Swap spiced rum with white rum or vodka. It works great with vanilla vodka too!
  • Add a splash of root beer Schnapps for a more boozy root beer flavor.
  • Instead of root beer swap with cream soda, orange soda or Dr. Pepper.
  • Substitute with RumChata for added creamy flavor and cinnamon to your fizzy root beer.
  • Change up the ice cream. Do a mix of ice cream flavors like Neapolitan, strawberry, chocolate, etc.
  • Add a splash of vanilla syrup for more vanilla flavor.
  • Top with whipped cream.

Is this a Strong Drink?

Yes, I used 2 ounces of alcohol for this hard root beer drink, but you can always make this adult drink as weak or strong as you would like.

Can I make this Alcoholic Root Beer Float in Advance?

Unfortunately since you have ice cream in this drink you will not want to make your drink till you are ready to serve it up. The ice cream will melt down fast and you will find it won’t have the fresh texture and flavor you want.

Can I use Sugar Free Root Beer for a Root Beer Float?

Yes, go ahead and use a sugar free root beer and sugar free vanilla ice cream. If you are looking for a low carb version you can leave out the sugar and swap with sugar free options. You can even use a nice cream!

There’s nothing like the creamy taste of a root beer float! Even better with spiced rum to make it an alcoholic root beer float cocktail!
