What Kind of Rum is in a Bob Marley Drink?

The Bob Marley drink uses Light Rum such as Bacardi Silver.

Light rums have a slightly citrusy flavor that mixes well with fruit juices.

If you love dark rum, you can add it to the red portion of the drink since that is the darkest layer. In order to keep the other layers the bright color, use a light rum.

What is Blue Curacao?

If you’re new to Blue Curacao it is an orange liqueur. It tastes much like an orange curacao, it’s just simply blue in color.

It’s what makes this favorite drink look amazing by mixing it with yellow ingredients to create the top green layer.

Ingredients

The Bob Marley drink takes a little work, but it’s worth it to get this sweet and delicious cocktail.

Different ingredients make up each layer of this Bob Marley cocktail. So, each layer will make up one third of your cocktail glass. Here’s the order of layers:

Red Portion of the Drink (bottom layer)

1 ounce Light Rum (also known as silver rum)

2 ounces Strawberry Daiquiri Mix

1 ounce Grenadine Syrup

Yellow Portion of the Drink (middle layer)

Pineapple juice makes up most of the middle layer. Since the Grenadine is heavier, the pineapple (or mango) will float above it creating the middle third of the drink.

1 ounce Light Rum,.

3 ounces of Pineapple Juice or Mango Juice. You can use fresh mango or pineapple hunks, but you’ll need to blend this mixture in a blender.

1 1/2  ounces of Sweet and Sour Mix.

(Note: only half of this mixture is used for this layer)

Green Portion of the Drink (top layer)

To get the gorgeous green top third of the drink:

Remaining yellow layer mixture.

1/2 ounce Blue Curacao

Garnish

Add a wedge or slice of fresh pineapple.

On a cocktail skewer, add a few maraschino cherries.

Sprig of Mint (optional)

How to Make a Bob Marley Drink

STEP 1: Combine all ingredients for the red layer into a cocktail shaker with just a few ice cubes. Shake until chilled.

STEP 2: Pour the mixture into the bottom of the glass (filling 1/3 of the glass). This is the lowest third of your glass.

STEP 3: Fill your glass with ice. I use 1 cup of ice. This will depend on the size of your glass.

STEP 4: Rinse the cocktail shaker then add all ingredients for the yellow layer. Shake with a few ice cubes until chilled.

STEP 5: Slowly strain into your glass filling the middle 1/3 of the glass. Use only half of the mixture.

STEP 6: Use the remaining drink mixture in the cocktail shaker and add 1/2 ounce of Blue Curacao. Shake until chilled and pour slowly on top.

STEP 7: Add a slice of pineapple and maraschino cherries for garnish. Optional, add a sprig of mint too.

Recipe Tips

  • I use small ice instead of cubes for a little more slushy texture.
  • Pour the middle and top layers slowly into your glass to keep the layers separated (the layers will naturally mix together a little). You can pour the mixture over the back of a spoon to slow the pour.
  • Squeeze a little lime juice into your drink if it is too sweet for your tastes. The acidity will help tone down the sweetness.
  • Easily double up the recipe to make two cocktails.

Variations

  • Use coconut rum in the middle layer for an added tropical taste.
  • Want to add banana flavor instead? Use a banana liqueur in the yellow layer instead of an ounce of rum.
  • Blend each layer in a blender with a cup of ice to create a frozen Bob Marley drink.

Enjoy sipping on this Bob Marley drink, catching the tropical vibes and reggae rhythms in every refreshing sip!
