Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Air Popper, Popcorn Machine, or Microwave Popcorn
  • Large Saucepan
  • Wooden Spoon or Silicone Spatula

Ingredients

To make these fun Halloween treats, you need just a few ingredients:

MARSHMALLOWS: The melted marshmallows are going to give this fun fall treat that gooey texture that holds together this sweet and salty treat.

BUTTER: I recommend using unsalted butter. But you can use salted butter but just know if your popcorn is flavored it will add extra savory to the recipe.

FOOD COLORING: We went with green on these popcorn balls. But you are welcome to change up the food coloring you use. Orange food coloring or Purple food coloring would work great too.

POPCORN: You can pop your own popcorn kernels or pop popcorn in a bag in the microwave.

CANDY EYE SPRINKLES: We used candy sprinkles that look like eyeballs for a monster treat look. Here are the candy eyes I use.

VAMPIRE TEETH: Add plastic vampire teeth to make the mouth for the Halloween popcorn balls. The kids have so much fun playing with these, so be sure to only serve to children that meet the age suggestion on the package. Here are the vampire teeth I’m using – these are also great to put in the middle of donuts for fun Halloween treats!

How to Make Halloween Popcorn Ball

For prep, go ahead and cut the vampire teeth at the bend. Also, lay out parchment paper on your counter top or on top of a large baking sheet.

In a deep large saucepan on low heat, add in large or mini marshmallows and butter. Stir until butter is melted and marshmallows have a thick melted texture. Remove from heat.

Add in neon green food gel and mix well.

Add in popcorn but be careful to not add any kernels (see below for tricks to easily remove kernels). Mix well until the popcorn is fully coated.

Let the mix cool just slightly so you don’t burn your clean hands rolling the popcorn balls.

Spray your hands with butter or non-stick spray to keep the balls from sticking to your hands.

Roll the popcorn into balls and set on the parchment paper.

Once you have your popcorn balls, remove an area in the middle of the ball and add the teeth. Take the extra popcorn you pulled out and add it back to the ball or make a new ball with the extra popcorn.

Add candy eye sprinkles in various patterns.

Place in the fridge for approximately 20 minutes to allow to set. Remove and let sit until they reach room temperature before serving.

If making into a party favor, simply drop in cellophane bag and tie it closed with a ribbon.

Tips

  • Using a buttered silicone spatula will help when mixing the popcorn into the marshmallow mixture. It helps ensure the marshmallow doesn’t stick to a spatula.
  • I aim for a 3-inch ball size for my Halloween popcorn balls. This is a good size and takes a few bites to finish this treat.
  • This can be a sticky mess so make sure to have things ready  to go. This way, when you go to shaping balls you have everything laid out to place balls on.
  • If your hands get sticky between making popcorn balls spray your hands with more cooking spray to help prevent the marshmallow mixture from sticking to you.
  • Work fast when assembling the popcorn mixture into the balls to make sure the candy eyes get set into the gooey mixture.

Variations

  • Add in some chopped dark chocolate, mini chocolate chips, or other chocolate to the Halloween popcorn balls.
  • Sprinkle with Halloween sprinkles if you don’t want to make them look like a vampire’s teeth face.
  • Use candy corn for teeth instead of plastic vampire teeth if you want a fully edible treat.
  • Use any color of gel food coloring to create your own style for this easy popcorn ball recipe.
  • Mix in Halloween M&M’s or other candies to match the Halloween season theme. Any edible decorations will be great additions.

How to Easily Remove Kernels from Popcorn

If you pop popcorn in the bag, before you open the bag, you can do this trick.

Flip the bag upside down so the opening to Popcorn is facing down. There is a little air hole and when you shake the bag the popcorn kernels will just fall right out of the bag.

Or if you have a cooking rack with smaller holes, you can pour the popcorn on the cooling rack and gently shake it. The un-popped kernels will fall through the holes and the popcorn will stay on top of the tray.

How do You Get Popcorn Balls to Stick Together?

If you’re Halloween popcorn balls aren’t sticking together well, then you may have added too much popcorn to the marshmallows.

Another possibility is the marshmallow s weren’t fully melted before adding the popcorn. Make sure the marshmallows are creamy and smooth before moving on to adding popcorn.

Can I Flavor these Halloween Popcorn Balls?

Go right ahead and experiment with flavor extracts if you want.

Cinnamon oil, almond extract, and strawberry extract, all would be a fun way to flavor these Halloween popcorn balls.

Food safe oils and extracts are what I recommend for flavoring.

How to Store Leftovers

Store any of the popcorn Halloween balls you do not eat right away in an airtight container at room temperature. These will last for around 5 days or so on the counter. You will find they dry out and get hard the longer they sit.

Wrap the popcorn balls in plastic wrap and then store them in a freezer bag or container. Freeze for 3-4 months. Then when you want one, remove it and enjoy. You can let it thaw at room temperature for an hour or so.

Serve up these spooky monster Halloween Popcorn Balls for your next Halloween party. These easy popcorn balls are a delicious treat for all ages, so everyone will love them.

Happy Halloween!
