Blue Lagoon Cocktail (+ Best Tip!)

Share With Your Friends!

The Blue Lagoon Cocktail is one of the most gorgeous Blue Curacao drinks and it tastes like summer in a glass. Refreshingly sweet and tart spiked with vodka and Blue Curacao liqueur. Even better, the Blue Lagoon drink is an easy summer cocktail to make!

Blue Lagoon Cocktail

This Blue Lagoon cocktail is so stunning and it’s delicious – my favorite cocktail combination! I’ve made other Blue Curacao drinks, such as this Blue Hawaiian (which is creamy delish!) but this is the first time I’ve mixed Blue Curacao with clear mixers. I love how vibrant this blue drink turns out.

With this Blue Lagoon drink recipe I found a splash of one extra ingredient made it a smoother cocktail. The standard Blue Lagoon recipe is delicious but I think you’ll enjoy a quick hack to reduce the slight bitter of the Blue Curacao.

What Does Blue Curacao Taste Like?

Blue Curacao is an orange liqueur, but it is less sweet than other orange liqueurs such as triple sec. Blue Curacao is made from the orange peels of the Laraha orange, which is a bitter orange fruit. In fact, it’s so bitter that the fruit of the orange isn’t even palatable.

The Laraha orange peels, spices, sugar and alcohol are combined to create this orange-flavored liqueur with a slightly bitter finish.

Why is Blue Curacao Blue?

The blue color comes from blue food coloring. At some point in the history of the liqueur, colors were added to make it more eye-catching and exotic. Actually, there are several colors of Curacao liqueur such as orange, red and green. By adding the blue color, it simply made it easier to sell drinks.

The addition of the blue color was all about marketing and improving sales, which worked! Blue color cocktails give off a fun tropical vibe that transports us to a beautiful white sandy beach lined with palm trees and a Caribbean sea lagoon. A pretty excellent marketing idea. Who doesn’t enjoy an exotic-looking cocktail?

History of the Blue Lagoon Cocktail

This cocktail comes all the way from Paris! Created by Andy McElhone, who was the son of Harry McElhone. Harry opened Harry’s New York Bar in Paris in 1911 which was famous during this heyday of Paris. Especially in the 1920’s during the US Prohibition era.

He is credited with creating other famous cocktails such as the Bloody Mary (still can’t believe this wasn’t created in New Orleans!), the Side Car and White Lady. Andrew “Andy” took over after his father’s passing and is credited with creating this exhilarating blue cocktail in 1972.

My Best Blue Lagoon Drink Tip

In other Blue Curacao cocktails, like the Blue Hawaiian, the creamy ingredients essentially remove the slightly bitter finish of the Blue Curacao. If the bitter finish isn’t to your liking, my best tip is to add a splash of orange juice. This tones down the bitter finish and melds perfectly with the orange liqueur.

Even with the addition of the orange juice splash, the Blue Lagoon drink is still a vibrant blue drink. So, don’t worry, you won’t lose the beauty of the drink!

Variation

If you don’t have lemonade on hand, you can use fresh lemon juice and simple syrup.

After taking pictures of this lovely Blue Lagoon cocktail, I headed outside to enjoy the sunset by the pool… YUM.

This Blue Lagoon Cocktail is refreshingly delicious! And I hope you try it with the added splash of orange juice as it makes it even smoother.

Cheers!
