What’s the Best Tequila for Strawberry Margarita Jello Shots?
A gold tequila is the most flavorful and it mixes well with the strawberry jello. You can use a White Tequila as well. Both will turn out excellent.
It’s really up to your own personal tastes. So, use your favorite tequila and you know you’ll love the flavor.
Kitchen Tools
Here’s a quick list of the kitchen tools you’ll need:
- Sauce Pan
- Heat Safe Bowl
- Measuring Cup
- 2 oz Mini Plastic Shot Glasses
- Baking Sheet or Muffin Tin
- Paring Knife
- 2 Small Plates or wide bowls
- Cutting board
What are the best Mini Plastic Jello Shot Glasses?
Always go for the 2 ounce shot glasses. Two ounces are the perfect size!
These are typically called condiment cups or souffle cups. Here are the ones on Amazon that I recommend:
Ingredients
Here’s all the ingredients you’ll need to make strawberry tequila jello shots:
STRAWBERRY JELLO: A large 6 oz box which makes approximately 14 jello shots.
WATER: One cup of boiling water to dissolve the strawberry gelatin packet.
TEQUILA: Gold tequila or White Tequila, depending on your favorite. I’m using a gold tequila because it’s a little more flavorful.
CORN SYRUP: to wet the rim of the condiment cups.
MARGARITA SALT OR COARSE SUGAR: Strawberry margaritas can be served with a salted rim or a sugar rim and some goes for strawberry margarita jello shots. A salted rim will have more of a sweet and sour flavor and a sugar rim will have a sweeter flavor.
LIMES: quartered limes to garnish each jello shot with a small lime slice.
FRESH STRAWBERRIES: also for garnish.
How to Make Strawberry Margarita Jello Shots
- Using a small saucepan over medium heat, bring 1 cup of water to a boil.
- Pour the boiling water into a heat safe bowl and whisk in the 6 oz strawberry jello packet until completely dissolved.
- Whisk in 1 cup tequila.
- Place plastic shot glasses in a muffin tin or on a baking sheet. This will catch any spillage and make it easier to move the jello shots in and out of the refrigerator.
- Pour about 1.5 oz of the strawberry margarita jello shot mixture into the 2 oz jello shot cups.
- Place in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours or until completely set.
- On a cutting board, use a small knife to cut small wedges of fresh lime.
- Pour about 1⁄4 cup of corn syrup into a wide bowl or saucer.
- Pour coarse salt (or coarse sugar) onto a small plate.
- Carefully dip the rims of the cups into the corn syrup.
- Then dip the rims of the shot glasses into the margarita salt (or sugar).
- Add a strawberry and a mini lime wedge on top of each cup.
Variations and Tips
- Replace 1/3 cup of water with a lime juice (I use Simply Limeade) to make strawberry lime margarita jello shots. Don’t use concentrated fruit juice, it’ll have too much lime flavor.
- For a more sweet and sour flavor, replace 1/3 cup of water with Margarita Mix.
- Replace 1/3 cup of tequila with a triple sec or Cointreau for an added orange flavor to the margarita, although this works, it does add an ever so slight bitterness to jello shot.
- Don’t want to lay the garnish on top? You can make a small slit in the tip of the strawberry and in the center of each wedge of lime and perch them on the rim of the cup.
- Last but not least, getting salt to stick to plastic shot glasses isn’t easy! You can use lime juice or tequila to wet the rim, but the salt will stick better when using something with a thicker consistency such as corn syrup.
- For an easier garnish, add a single sliced strawberry on top, which makes it easier to eat!
How Long will Strawberry Margarita Jello Shots Last?
These strawberry tequila jello shots can be made 2-3 days in advance. Simply keep them stored in the refrigerator with the plastic lids on top.
Then, just before serving, add the sugar or salt rim and garnishes.
Your friends and family will love this Strawberry Margarita Jello Shots recipe! It’s fun, tasty and just what you need to get the party started.
Cheers!
