What is Blue Curacao Liqueur?

Blue Curacao is actually an orange liqueur which goes perfect with the lime flavors in this Blue Margarita drink. Hailing from the island of Curacao, this blue liqueur is made with a locally grown orange Laraha fruit.

Laraha oranges are bitter oranges, you can’t actually eat them like a regular orange. Although the fruit has a bitter taste, it’s the oils from the bitter peel of the Laraha fruit that are used to create a this signature liqueur.

It’s also an easy substitute for triple sec as they both have an orange flavor, although Blue Curacao will have a subtle bitter finish.

Why is Blue Curacao Blue?

The bright blue color is actually a dye. It was added as a marketing tactic to sell more orange liqueur, which worked.

What an easy way to sell more blue margaritas, right?

Blue Margarita Ingredients

All you need are a few simple ingredients:

Tequila: Use your favorite Blanco tequila. Also called silver or white tequila, it has a slight citrus flavor that doesn’t compete with the rest of the margarita flavors.

Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice is the base for this tasty cocktail.

Blue Curacao: Adds a little orange flavor and gives this drink the perfect bright blue hue. It’s the substitute in a classic margarita recipe for Triple Sec, Cointreau or Grand Marnier. I’m using Bols Blue Curacao.

Margarita Salt: Coarse salt or Kosher salt is needed for the rim of the glass. Table salt will not work correctly or taste good.

Lime Wedge: Use a lime wedge or lime wheel for garnish.

Orange Slice: Optional garnish that just makes this drink look even better.

How to Make a Blue Margarita

STEP 1: Use a lime wedge to wet the edge of a glass.

STEP 2: Dip rim into the margarita salt until fully coated. If your cocktail glass is too large to fit into the container of salt, simply pour salt into a shallow dish and then dip all sides of the rim.

STEP 3: Fill your margarita glass with ice cubes.

STEP 4: Squeeze 2-3 fresh limes into your glass.

Blue Margarita Recipe Variations

  • You can use a sour mix or Simply Limeade instead of squeezing fresh limes. This makes it easier if you need to make a large pitcher of blue margaritas.
  • If you like a sweeter margarita, add a splash of simple syrup.
  • Easily mix up a large batch in a cocktail shaker and strain into your salted glasses filled with ice.
