Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Cocktail Glasses (highball glass, tall glass, etc)
  • Shot Glass (for measuring)
  • 2 Separate Plates (small)

Ingredients

Here’s everything you need to make this purple people eater cocktail recipe:

SIMPLE SYRUP: You will use simple syrup to create a sweet component to the cocktail. Add less or more to sweeten the drink.

PURPLE SANDING SUGAR: Purple sugar on the rim tastes delicious and matches the cocktail. Since this is a Halloween drink, you can use Halloween sprinkles to add a fun Halloween-themed drink look.

BLUE CURACAO: This is a blue-colored liqueur that offers a vibrant orange citrus flavor. You will use this in the cocktail to help balance the flavors.

VODKA: I’m using plain vodka to make this mixed drink because it is a mild alcohol that won’t overpower the flavors.

RASPBERRY SCHNAPPS: A nice fruity component that is going to really bring out a bold flavor to this purple-colored drink.

SWEET AND SOUR MIX: Sweet and sour mix is used similar to a simple syrup but it does bring in a bite of tart. This also helps balance out the flavors to keep the drink from being too sweet or too tart.

GRAPE JUICE: Grape juice helps give the drink that purple color, but also a delicious sweet flavor.

SILVER CAKE SHIMMER: This is a decorative powder you can use to decorate desserts and drinks. It gives these drinks a nice shimmer!

GARNISH: Lemon or lime wedge. Or add a spooky gummy eyeball to give it a scary monster look.

How to Make a Purple People Eater Drink

  1. On a small plate add your simple syrup.
  2. On a separate small plate add the Halloween sprinkles.
  3. Dip the glasses in the simple syrup then the sprinkles.
  4. Set the glasses to the side for 10 minutes, upside down on a piece of parchment paper (or similar).
  5. Add all ingredients to the cocktail shaker with just a handful of ice cubes and shake to chill and mix.
  6. Once your sanding sugar is set, fill your glass with ice cubes.
  7. Pour the cocktail mixture into the prepared glasses and garnish with a lemon or lime wedge.

Tips

Make sure you allow time for the Halloween sugar to dry on the rim of the glass – with the glass sitting upside down. This is going to help ensure the sprinkles won’t slide down the glass.

Variations

You can have some fun with this Purple People Eater drink and make it to fit your tastes:

  • Swap the simple syrup with melted candy melt chocolate, and then add sprinkles to create a different rimmed glass.
  • You can use cranberry juice or cran-grape juice in replace of classic grape juice.
  • Add a splash of lemon lime soda or ginger ale for a nice carbonated twist.
  • Switch to Triple Sec instead of blue curaçao, but it will have a little less color.
  • You can rim the glass with Halloween sprinkles purple instead of purple sanding sugar.
  • Garnish with gummy eyeball candies, lime slice, lemon wheel, or other fun garnishments.

Why is it called the Purple People Eater?

Purple People Eater is a fun name that came about as a novelty song by Sheb Wooley in 1958 – where it hit number 1 on the Billboard chart!

The song is about a purple people eater monster who came to Earth to join a rock band. All inspired by a child’s story.

So that’s where the inspiration comes from for of this purple people eater Halloween cocktail.

Can I make a non-alcoholic version of this Purple People Eater?

You sure can!

  • Simply leave out the alcohol and use grenadine (a red syrup) in replace of raspberry schnapps.
  • Add more grape juice or cranberry juice for color.
  • Then add lemon-lime soda in replace of the vodka.

How to Store Leftovers

This drink is best served right away.

If you do have leftovers, store in the fridge without any ice to keep the drink from watering down. Stir well before you pour into glasses. It will last 1-2 days in the fridge.

The Purple People Eater Drink is the perfect addition to your next Halloween party! Happy Halloween.

Cheers!
