The air fryer name is a bit of a misnomer. There’s no frying involved, which makes for a healthier dish because there is no deep frying in oil.
It’s really more of a convection oven that swirls hot air around the food.
The benefits of an air fryer is the ability to get a crispy chicken wing without oil (deep frying) and without drying out the meat (oven baking, if you cooked them long enough to actually get a crispy skin). Plus, it takes about half the time to cook than oven baking.

BBQ Chicken Wings Air Fryer Ingredients
With just 4 ingredients, you’ll have delicious air fryer chicken wings in less than 30 minutes. Here are all the ingredients you need:
- 1 Dozen Raw Chicken Wings
- BBQ Sauce
- Non-stick cooking spray
You can change up the flavor with various sauces. Try Honey BBQ Sauce or kick up with jalapeno BBQ sauce. The choice is yours!

How to Make Air Fryer BBQ Chicken Wings
Step 1: Remove the raw chicken wings from the refrigerator and set them out until they reach room temperature.
Step 2: Use a paper towel to pat each wing dry. These air fryer BBQ chicken wings will turn out crispier if the extra moisture is removed before cooking.
Step 3: Preheat the air fryer to 390 degrees.
Step 4: Spray the wings with a light coat of cooking oil.
Step 5: Season with a dusting of salt and black pepper.
Step 6: Make sure to arrange the chicken wings in a single layer in your air fryer basket. This ensures the hot air can circulate around each wing for even cooking.
If you aren’t able to lay them in a single layer, you’ll need to add additional cook time. Plus, make sure to rotate them inside your air fryer basket at least twice to get all the wings fully exposed to the circulating air.
A great tip to utilize all the space in your basket is to buy an air fryer rack to fit inside. This way you can stack upwards and not worry about the wings laying on top of each other.
Step 7: Air Fry for 15 minutes.
Step 8: Coat the wings in your favorite BBQ sauce. You can brush on a layer of BBQ sauce or shake them in a zip lock bag / plastic bowl with a lid filled with sauce.
Step 9: Place the wings back in the air fryer for 5-10 minutes (depending on how crisp you want the outside).
I always suggest that after 5 minutes, you open your air fryer to check their progress and go from there. Every air fryer model is a little different and there is no harm in checking.
Once you’ve made these to your liking, you’ll know the best cook time for your air fryer and how long it takes to get the crispy texture you want.
Step 10: Plate with your favorite dipping sauce, carrot sticks and celery sticks and serve!
