What is an Air Fryer?
I can’t live without my air fryer! And if you enjoy making easy meals and desserts, you’re missing out if you don’t have this handy kitchen appliance. I use it for just about everything these days. Air fryer recipes are just easier and quicker for me.
In easy terms, it’s basically a mini convection oven.
It’s typically quicker than oven baking, it’s healthier than deep frying and I love how perfectly crispy it bakes the outside while keeping the inside juicy. Where oven baking often dries out the middle (be it a meat recipe to a dessert recipe), the air fryer keeps food tender and juicy.
An air fryer allows you to cook without deep fat fryer oils, making meals healthier for the family. It cooks food evenly, there’s so little mess that it’s super easy to clean up.

How Does an Air Fryer Work?
They have become popular over the past few years with people looking for new and delicious ways to cook without butter or oil. Air fryers are able to cook food using very hot air and convection fans. The high-powered fan circulates air throughout the cooking surface to ensure food is evenly cooked.
For these air fryer apple hand pies, it creates a flaky, crispy crust that’s simply delish with melt-in-your-mouth apple filling.
What Is A Hand Pie?
A homemade hand pie can be filled with a sweet and savory filling, covered in a buttery, flaky crust. Hand pies are easy recipes and quite versatile. They can be filled with your favorite flavors such as apple pie filling, peach pie filling, cherry pie filling or blueberry pie filling.
Hand held apple pies are made by placing a small amount of filling on a circular piece of dough, melding the edges together to keep the filling from spilling out and then baking them for a treat that can fit in your hand.

How to make Air Fryer Apple Hand Pies
Here are easy step-by-step directions:
Step 1: Set up your ingredients. Crack one egg into a bowl. Open the can of Apple Pie Filling and pour into a bowl. Unwrap the pre-packaged pie crusts.
Step 2: Roll the pie crust out into a large flat circle.
Step 3: Use a round cookie cutter to cut out circles in the pie crust.
Step 4: In half of the pie crust circles add approximately a half spoon of apple pie filling. If the pie filling has large apple slices, add one apple slice on top of the pie crust circle.
Step 5: Slightly roll the remaining circles with a rolling pin to make them a tiny bit larger than the pie crust circles with the apples.
Step 6: Place the slightly larger pie crust circles on top of the apple filling circles and meld the edges together with a fork.
Step 7: Use a fork to whisk the egg in the bowl. Then egg wash each mini apple pie using a pastry brush.
Step 8: Arrange the pies on the air fryer rack or air fryer basket (depending on your model) so they are not touching or stacked. Bake the apple hand pies in the air fryer for 12-15 minutes at 350 degrees.
Tip: Every air fryer cooks slightly differently. The first time you make these apple pies, check them at 12 minutes. It does not hurt to open the air fryer to get a good look at them. If they aren’t golden brown yet, return to the air fryer and continue cooking, keeping a close watch.
Once you’ve made this recipe, you’ll know exactly how much time to cook your mini apple pies the next time based on your air fryer.
Step 9: Remove from the air fryer and let them slightly cool.
Step 10: Serve air fryer apple hand pies while they are still warm!
- If you already make your own homemade pie crusts or homemade apple pie filling, you can certainly use them instead of store-bought ingredients.
- You can change up the pie filling to other fruit flavors.
- If you particularly like a common apple pie spice and want more of it, add a little to the apple pie filling to your tastes (ie. nutmeg, cinnamon, a little extra brown sugar)
- Top these air fryer apple hand pies with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra filling air fryer apple dessert.
Should you Refrigerate Hand Pies?
If you have leftover apple hand pies, you should refrigerate them in an air-tight container.
Because this recipe includes eggs, they should not be left out at room temperature. Refrigerating them for up to 3 days will keep them fresh.
How do you Reheat Hand Pies?
Make sure you reheat these air fried apple pies in the air fryer! If you were to use the oven or microwave the crusts will not turn out crisp again.
To reheat, place the apple pies in the air fryer for a cook time of 3-5 minutes at 320 degrees.
