Strawberry Margaritas on the rocks are super refreshing!

Margaritas are my favorite cocktail (I am from Texas!). I make a batch of regular lime margaritas just about every weekend and I’ve got it down to a science. I use this super easy Margarita Recipe that only takes 3 minutes to make and they are delicious.

On occasion though, I venture out and make other flavored margarita recipes and I do love strawberries in summer cocktails, like this sweet and tart Strawberry Lemonade Margarita!

Depending on where you live in the U.S., strawberry season peaks anywhere between April to June. But in today’s global market, fresh strawberries are available almost year round. This means you can make fresh strawberry margaritas anytime you feel like it.

Of course, this cool cocktail is perfect for the hot summer months and if you love fruit juices and tequila, check out this Tequila Cranberry Cocktail and this Tequila Screwdriver.

How to Make a Strawberry Margarita

This homemade strawberry margarita starts with ripe strawberries for an ultra fresh flavor. Instead of using a pre-made mix, an added benefit to this margarita recipe is you can control the amount of sweetness to suit your tastes. All you need to do is increase or decrease the amount of Simple Syrup to your liking.

Even though this strawberry margarita is on the rocks, you’ll still need a blender to puree the fresh strawberries. Wash your strawberries and cut off the green leaves then toss them in the blender.

Add light tequila, Grand Marnier, fresh lime juice and simple syrup and blend until you have a smooth texture.

You’ll still have small bits of strawberries when you’re done blending. You can either leave them or strain your margarita concoction as you pour it into your glass.

Margarita Salt or Sugar?

Both are great!

Traditionally, a strawberry margarita recipe calls for a salted rim and I personally like the tang of the salty and sweet flavors. To salt the rim, wet the edges of your glass with a lime wedge and dip it into coarse margarita salt.

To use sugar, I use the simple sugar to moisten the rim of the glass. Take a saucer or salad plate and pour enough simple sugar so it’s deep enough to cover a little more than just the edges of your glass. On a separate saucer, add enough granulated sugar or brown sugar to make a nice coating around the rim.

Fresh Strawberry Margarita on the Rocks Recipe (makes 2 drinks):

  • 1.5 cups fresh strawberries
  • 4.5 ounces of tequila (3 shots using a standard size shot glass)
  • 1.5 ounces Grand Marnier (1 standard shot)
  • 1.5 ounces Simple Syrup (I use pre-made syrup, but you can make your own if preferred)
  • 1.5 ounces fresh squeezed lime juice (1 shot)
  • Coarse cocktail salt for rim (or you can use sugar)
  • Lime wedge and/or strawberry for garnish

Mixing Directions:

  1. Clean and slice strawberries.
  2. Combine strawberries, tequila, Grand Marnier, simple syrup and lime juice together in a blender and blend until smooth. If you don’t want to dirty up a blender, use a large cocktail shaker and muddle the ingredients really well (cut the recipe in half to muddle one drink at a time). You can then choose to strain the liquid into your glass or don’t strain it and you can have more strawberry bits in your drink.
  3. Rub a slice of lime around the rim of your glasses and dip into cocktail salt.
  4. Fill your glasses with ice and pour in the strawberry margarita mix.
  5. Garnish with fresh lime slices and strawberries.

Strawberry Margarita Tips:

The degree of sweetness in strawberry margaritas is always a personal preference.

  • If this recipe isn’t sweet enough for your taste buds, add a little more simple syrup.
  • If this recipe is too sweet for you, there are several easy options. Add a little water to dilute. Add additional fresh lime juice. Or add a little more tequila (shhhh… I won’t tell anyone!)

This delicious Strawberry Margarita on the Rocks will make your taste buds happy. Enjoy!
