Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Small saucepan or Medium saucepan
  • Plastic shot glasses (also known as condiment cups, here are the ones I use from Amazon)
  • Whisk or Spatula
  • Medium bowl

Ingredients

1 CUP CREAM SODA:  Reach for some cream soda any brand works. This is going to give it that sweet butterbeer flavor.

1 PACKAGE UNFLAVORED GELATIN: So you will use plain gelatin as the cream soda and vodka are what flavor the shot. I typically use the Knox brand and the box comes with 4 envelopes of plain gelatin.

1/2 CUP WHIPPED CREAM OR VANILLA VODKA: Vanilla Vodka or Whipped Cream Vodka to sweeten up the butterbeer jelly shots. Vanilla Vodka is the standard, but I personally like the Whipped Cream Vodka better, I feel it tastes smoother. The choice is yours!

1/2 CUP BUTTERSCOTCH CREAM LIQUEUR: A delicious blend of butter and brown sugar with hints of cream. I go for the cream liqueur over Butterscotch Schnapps because it’s creamier.

WHIPPED CREAM: Add Cool Whip whipped cream on top for a creamy and light garnish.

GOLD SUGAR SPRINKLES:  Go a step further and add some colorful sprinkles to brighten up these festive jello shots.

CARAMEL SAUCE (optional): Drizzle with caramel sauce on top. Might be a little messier, but it tastes delicious.

How to Make Butterbeer Jello Shots

  1. In a medium-sized saucepan pour in the cream soda. Heat on medium to high, and bring to a boil. Set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl add the whipped vodka and caramel cream liquor.
  3. Sprinkle gelatin into the liquor mixture and stir to combine.
  4. Allow the gelatin to bloom for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the hot cream soda to the mixture and stir to combine.
  6. Set your plastic jello shot cups on a baking sheet or baking pan.
  7. Pour the mixture into the 2 ounce plastic shot glasses.
  8. Chill for 4 hours in the refrigerator.
  9. Add whipped cream and sprinkles just before serving.

Variations

  • You can use Butterscotch Schnapps for this recipe instead of a butterscotch cream liqueur. But, the added cream really makes these butterbeer jello shots extra amazing.
  • In a pinch, you can use a caramel liqueur, the tastes are quite similar.
  • If you’re not a fan of flavored vodka, you can use regular vodka. You’ll loose a little of the sweet vanilla flavor, but the butterscotch flavor will still come through well. In this case, you need to add a small amount of vanilla extract to the recipe.
  • Use whipped cream vodka instead of vanilla vodka.
  • You can add up to 3/4 cup vodka for a bit of a stronger jello shot. For Halloween, add in colorful Halloween sprinkles.

Can I make Non-Alcoholic Butterbeer Jello Shots?

If you want to make a jello shot form that is a kid-friendly version, replace the alcohol with more cream soda.

You can even add a little bit of orange juice as well.

How to Store Leftovers

Jello shots can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for 4-5 days. Which means, you can make these ahead of time.

Unfortunately, you can’t freeze jello shots as the gelatin doesn’t thaw well once frozen.

Butterbeer jello shots are the perfect way to start off the party. From a Harry Potter movie night to a fun Halloween party, these butterschotch jello shots with vanilla vodka are fun cocktails for your next party.
