Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Cookie Sheet (for transferring shots from counter to fridge)
  • Plastic Shot glasses / Condiment cups (here are the ones I use from Amazon)
  • Small saucepan
  • Measuring Cups
  • 2 Small Bowls

Ingredients

STRAWBERRY JELLO: The red layer uses the fruity strawberry jello.

UNFLAVORED GELATIN: You will use unflavored gelatin for this recipe.

WATER: Filtered water is best so it doesn’t alter the flavor of the jello shots.

CONDENSED MILK:  Sweetened condensed milk is ultra creamy and sweet and will help you get that ultra-velvety texture to the layers of jello.

FOOD COLORING:  Black and green food coloring is used to create the cool layers in the plastic jello shot cups.

VODKA: Reach for your favorite brand of vodka. I recommend that you chill your vodka in the fridge or freezer. If you like strawberry vodka, definitely use it.

STRAWBERRY BOBA:  I added strawberry red boba on top of these zombie brain jello shots. It gave the perfect look!

MARASCHINO CHERRIES: Love a cherry on top!

How to Make Zombie Jello Shots

  1. Red Layer (bottom layer)
  2. Boil 1 cup of water.
  3. In a medium-sized bowl add 3 ounce packet of strawberry jello, the hot water and 1/2 cup cold water.
  4. Whisk to combine
  5. Next add condensed milk to give the red layer a creamy texture.
  6. Add chilled vodka. Mix until combined.
  7. Fill the plastic shot cups 1/2 way with the strawberry jello mixture.
  8. Chill for 1 hour.

Black (middle) and Green (top) Layers

The spooky mix of all three layers is what gives these zombie jello shots that scary look and feel, especially the green layer!

  1. In a medium-sized bowl add the unflavored gelatin and cold water. Whisk to combine.
  2. Let it sit for 5 minutes so it can bloom.
  3. Boil 1 cup of water.
  4. Add the hot water to the gelatin. Mix until combined.
  5. Next, add the condensed milk, and chilled vodka. Mix until combined.
  6. Separate the mixture into 2 small bowls.
  7. Add black food coloring to one bowl, and mix to combine.
  8. Add green food coloring to the other bowl, and mix to combine. Set the green to the side, and keep it at room temperature.
  9. Using an injector (or ladle with a spout or a funnel) to fill the black Jello mixture into the condiment cups ¼ full. Chill for 1 hour.
  10. Remove the jello cups and fill with the green layer until full.
  11. Chill for 1 hour.
  12. Garnish with the strawberry red boba, and a maraschino cherry.

Tips

A few tips for making the best zombie jello shots:

  • Here are some tips and tricks along with variations to these creepy Halloween jello shots you might want to try out.
  • Make sure you work with boiling water to ensure all the gelatin dissolves fully before you add other ingredients.
  • Make sure before you add the black layer the red layer has been fully set up. The same goes for the green layer. Otherwise, you will not get those defined layers of colors.
  • Use a jello shot injector to help pour into the small condiment cups without spilling. You could also use a small funnel or a ladle with a spout.

Variations

These zombie jello shots can be customized to your liking! Have fun and make them your own.

  • Feel free to swap out the vodka with other alcohol. Tequila or whiskey is often used in jello shots. Or even reach for vanilla vodka or whipped cream vodka for added flavor.
  • If you prefer, you can use cherry or watermelon jello for the red layer.
  • To replace unflavored gelatin, use green apple or lime jello for the green layer. Then for the black layer, you could do grape and add some black food coloring in to deepen the color.
  • If you do not have boba for topping you could do cherry pie filling or even raspberry filling for topping the shots.
  • Use candy eyes or creepy eyeballs that are gummies to the tall shot glass instead of boba for a fun vibe. Check out these Halloween Eyeball Jello Shots to see what I’m talking about.
  • Gummy eyeballs, gummy worms, or other Halloween candies can work great for decorating. Just head to the grocery store to find toppers for the shots. It is so much fun creating a mix of ideas!

Do I Have to Make Layers for Jello Shots?

I would make at least 2 layers. The red and black will look great together topped with the strawberry popping boba.

Or make the red with the green layer to get more of the zombie jello shots look.

If you want to make a single layer of jello for the jello shots just skip adding the next layer to the recipe and fill the cup full of the mixture. You can pick the color you want.

How Long Does it Take Jello Shots to Fully Set Up?

Once you get all the layers together in this zombie jello shots recipe, I recommend letting the jello shots sit in the fridge for at least 1 hour. If you can, leave them for 2-4 hours to really get them chilled.

This is going to ensure all the layers get fully set up and will be tasty Halloween treats to serve up at your party to snack on.

How to Store Leftovers

Any shots you do not eat right away can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to a 3 days. You will find they will break down a bit as they sit in the fridge over time. So the jello cups are best eaten within the first few days.

Jello can’t be frozen so make sure to not try to freeze the shots for later on down the line. The jello will break down.

Zombie Jello Shots are fun, delicious and spooky enough to add a thrilling experience to your Halloween party. This jello shot recipe is always a show stopper and your guests will love them.

Happy Halloween!
